GCHS Mourns Loss of Former Basketball Star

The GCHS community is mourning the loss of 2011 graduate Alex Scarbro, who died Saturday, Nov. 24.

"The entire Grayslake Community High School District 127 school community extends our love, support and prayers to the Scarbro family," said Supt. Catherine Finger.

"Alex was a gift to all who knew her and her loss is deeply felt. Staff members will be available throughout the week and beyond for support and grief counseling. Students are encouraged to seek out their counselor, dean or building administrator for assistance and support as school resumes tomorrow."

Scarbro was a standout player on the 2010-11 GCHS girls' basketball team. She continued her basketball career while attending the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

On Twitter, Scarbro is being remembered by those who knew her from GCHS:

"Life's too short. To see someone I went to school with pass away makes you realize that. She was so young."

"You you were such a great person, a happy human being, a great athlete. I am speechless."

"My prayers go out to the Scarbro family, you were an amazing basketball player and a great opponent. Play your heart out up there."

Star athlete

According to Grayslake District 127, while playing basketball at GCHS, Scarbro averaged 10.7 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, which helped lead the Rams to a 28-4 record, a school record 22 game-winning streak, and a Sectional Championship.

Scarbro had also been named to the Fox Valley All-Conference team and to the Daily Herald Lake County all-area team. After high school, Scarbro joined the Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks basketball team. She was #32.

Scarbro's basketball profile on the Warhawks Website states her favorite class was math, her favorite quote was "Livestrong," and her favorite high school athletics memory was "winning sectionals."

If she could bring three things from Grayslake to Whitewater, Scarbro said it would be "my 2 best friends, Tastee freeze, Fred’s diner."

Memorial

"You will live forever in our memories and hearts," stated a memorial page created for Scarbro, who turned 20 on Oct. 15.

Other condolences on the memorial page stated:

"I remember when you practically lived at our house. You were a lovely, funny and polite girl who will be missed! RIP Alex!"

"A beautiful young lady who will be missed by so many."

"You were a nice and cool person and you were good friends with a lot of my family."

"I can't believe this is all real. You just posted a picture on Instagram! Well we will meet again Alex! Sleep pretty and rest in peace!"
