Grayslake Central Music Students Place Third at State


The following informations comes from a Grayslake District 127 press release. 

The Illinois High School Association has posted the final results for High School Music Sweepstakes standings for 2013-2014 on its official website, ihsa.org.  

The Grayslake Central High School music department has finished a successful competition season, ranking third for all Class A schools in Illinois.  Grayslake Central music has ranked in the top ten in either the AA or A school division for the past 12 years. 

State ranking was determined by points earned through student music events that competed at both the IHSA State Solo and Ensemble Contest, held March 8 at Harvard High School, and the IHSA State Music Organization Contest, held April 11 and 12 at Waukegan High School.

Regional music competitions are held throughout the state each spring, with the final results tabulated by comparing all Illinois school results.  The Grayslake Central music department received a total of 621 points.  

At the April event, the Honors Treble Choir and Jazz Choir received Division 1 ratings, while the Honors and Concert Bands, Jazz Band and Honors Mixed Choir received Division 2 ratings.

Grayslake Central finishes behind Class A first place Carbondale High School and second place Sycamore High School, and will receive a special award from the IHSA this spring in addition to the individual band and choir awards for Solo and Ensemble and Organization Contests.  

The Grayslake Central music department consists of three choirs and two bands that meet during the school day as well as a jazz band, jazz combo and 2 jazz choirs that meet after school.  

Music directors at GCHS are Dominic Bertino and Jennifer J. White, with assistant directors Steve Thomas and Megan Ames. The Fine Arts Department Chair is Mrs. Renee Gugel.
