Prairie Crossing Charter School to Hold Bullying Awareness Week

A number of events are planned Nov. 18-22.

Students, staff and parents at Prairie Crossing Charter School will sponsor bully awareness week again this year. During the week of Nov. 18-22, activities and discussions will take place to help students identify and respond to bullying behaviors.

On Monday morning, the school community will attend an opening ceremony. During this ceremony, presenters will discuss bullying facts and the Stop-Walk-Talk program with students, staff and parents. Throughout the week, teaching staff will hold discussions and activities with their students about bullying behavior. Members of the school staff have been working with PCCS student council members to provide activities, support and education about bullying that will help students understand how to identify, respond, and counter bullying behaviors. PCCS seventh and eighth grade students will watch the movie “Bully” (adapted for younger audiences) while 3rd through 6th grade students will watch the movie “Speak Up”. Students in all grades will have discussions appropriate to their age, grade, and level of understanding.

Additionally, the Parent Staff Organization will host a parent forum on bullying on the evening of Nov. 18. During this forum, school staff will review the school’s implementation of PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) and how PBIS can be applied to bullying behavior. Parents will be shown a video regarding all aspects of bullying and staff will be available to answer questions and provide support.

Andrea Koeniger, dean of faculty and students, states, “We want our students to be able to identify disrespectful behavior and also be empowered to appropriately address negative behavior. Our goal is for our students to have the tools and strategies to address and react to disrespectful behavior and also who to go to for support when a bullying situation is taking place.”
