Woodview School Collects 300 Pounds of Candy for Troops

Two teachers at Woodview School encouraged students to bring in their leftover Halloween candy this year so it could be donated to troops overseas, according to local media reports.

When two teachers at Woodview School in Grayslake asked students to bring in some of their leftover Halloween candy to donate to U.S. troops overseas, they expected to get between 10 to 15 pounds of sweets, according to the Daily Herald.

Instead, health/physical education instructor Steve Feldman and first-grade teacher  Jennifer Miller received 305 pounds of candy, which was donated to Operation Gratitude and will be sent as part of its 60,000 holiday care packages to the troops, according to the article.

Gentle Care Dentistry in Mundelein offered to cover the costs of shipping "far more candy than expected," according to CBS Chicago.

Feldman said the purpose of the candy donation at Woodview was to help support the troops but also to encourage healthy habits in children by preventing them from eating so much candy, according to CBS Chicago.
