Anglers Find Great Places to Fish in Grayslake

Teens find fishing holes… a free activity for those under 16.

The weather is amazing this summer, and just right for fishing. Fishing? That’s right, right here in Grayslake we have plenty of great spots for you to hang out and try your hand as an angler, or fisherman.

Some places you can catch and cook your fish, while other places require you to catch-and-release your fish. Whatever the rules are, you’ll be sure to have fun with this exciting sport that is good for all ages.

In and around Grayslake, there are areas such as Jones’ Island on Grayslake, Molly’s Pond in the Haryan Farm subdivision, Mariner’s Cove pond, Third Lake, Druce Lake, and Highland Lake (which is a private lake to those who live in the subdivision.)

Alex Kendzoir, 14, of Mariner’s Cove was fishing at the pond in his subdivision, recently. The freshman at talked about his fishing preferences.

“My favorite fishing spot in the town of Grayslake is actually Druce Lake here in Mariner’s Cove. That is where I have the best luck catching fish," Alex said. "They usually bite at six or seven in the morning, or at five or six at night. I go fishing with friends and neighbors, and we usually just catch-and-release our fish. Since we’re under 16 years old, we do not need a license.”

Alex spoke of casting and tackle such as rods and bait . “I usually use a sidearm cast, and a spin rod. Live worms seem to work best, but my brother actually caught a fish using a chunk of hot dog once when he was in, like, the fourth grade.”

When asked what kinds of fish he’s caught so far, he replied, “Mostly bass, bluegill, and perch.” He admitted his favorite part of fishing was when he actually caught a fish… naturally!

Another 14-year-old boy named Britton de la Chapelle, who will be a freshman at Loyola Academy in the fall, talked about fishing in Grayslake.

“My favorite fishing spot is on Molly’s Pond, right in my backyard [in the Haryan Farm subdivision]. I’ve been fishing for about five years and usually catch bass, bluegill, and minnows. I usually just use the overhead cast," Britton said.

He shared the same advice for bait and fishing times when he said, “I use real worms, and sometimes rubber worms. The luckiest times I have fishing is when I go super-early in the morning, or around dinnertime at like five or six at night.”

His friend’s little brother Brandon, 7 years old, joined him fishing today for the first time ever. When asked what he thought of fishing he replied, “Not fun. I didn’t catch a fish!” Oh well… you can’t win them all!

If you want to go fishing, you can find all the supplies you might need at such super-stores like K-Mart or Outdoor World at the Gurnee Mills Mall. Find out if you need a license depending on your age or the lake you want to fish at in Lake County. Happy fishing, y’all!
