Cubs Win!! Cubs Win!!

The GYBA Mustang Cubs brought the lumber in a 13-7 victory over the mighty Giants.

Finally! Not the victory…the dry weather that allowed a baseball game to be played at JayCee park.

The home team Cubs fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first to the a solid Giants team, but came back strong with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead.

The Giants scored three in their half of the second and shut out the Cubs in the bottom half of the frame. The weather turned colder and things looked bleak for the battling baby bears.

The behemoths of Frisco Bay tallied twice more in the top of the third to take what looked like a solid 6-4 lead and a sure victory. But nothing is sure in Mustang Baseball except that 9- and 10-year-old kids will still play in the dirt, sit in the outfield grass and pick dandelions, and time out must be taken during the games to tie shoelaces.

The Cubs came roaring back with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-6 lead, which lasted until the Giants came to bat in the top of the fourth innning. Neither team was giving up a chance to win very easily. The score was knotted at 7’s and darkness was coming fast like speeding Metra train.

The rally caps went on, chants of "Two Out Rally! Clap – Clap – ClapClapClap" filled the home team dugout with smiles and excitement. The Cubs came out swinging in the bottom of the fourth and plated five runs. Hits were flying all over the park like mosquitoes at Spring Break tan contest in Cancun.

The Giants came up with one last chance to take back the lead in the top of the fifth. This was the type of team and the type of situation that has coaches reaching for the Rol-aids and rediscovering their faith as they look skyward and say, "Please, please! Just give us three more outs. Just three. We're only leading by six runs and that never seems like quite enough in this league to feel comfortable with."

With stellar pitching and defense so tight you couldn’t roll a nickel through the infield without losing four cents, the Cubs shut out and shut down the towering Giant offense to close out the victory 13-7.

Scotty Van Steenhuyse did an outstanding job umpiring behind the plate and made a catcher’s interference call and a runner interference call in a very exciting game. Both teams were slugging the ball and played extremely well despite the lamentable lack of practice time due to the overwhelming amount of precipitation seen in Lake County this spring.
