Grayslake Youth Wrestling Club Concludes Season On A High Note

Three GYWC wrestlers were crowned Regional champions as the club continues to build talent in Grayslake.

Twenty-one wrestlers compete at Regional tournament as the wrestling seasons wound down. The Grayslake Youth Wrestling Club (GYWC) capped their second season with a strong showing at Fremd High School in Palatine on Sunday, Feb. 26. 

Three GYWC wrestlers were crowned Regional champions as the club continues to build talent in Grayslake. Maurice Edwards, Matthew Nixon and Ethan Torres captured titles in their divisions. 

Overall, Bantams (4-8 years old) captured two championships and three runner-up finishes. Maurice Edwards concluded his season going 29-0 and capturing his second consecutive Regional championship. Edwards outscored his opponents 31-1 in two dominating matches leading to the gold medal. Edwards is a second year wrestler and will move to the Intermediate Division next year.

Matthew Nixon pinned his first opponent and captured a 3-2 victory in the championship match to finish his second season. Matthew Jens, Caleb Hollen, Avery Rogina and Jacob Hollen all had strong showings in the Bantam division. 

Intermediate (9-10) wrestlers advanced three of five wrestlers to the Sectional tournament. Ethan Torres dominated his opponent 10-1 to capture the crown and the number one seed next weekend. Second year wrestler Ben Bauman rode a 7-1 victory to advance, and rookie Joeseph Jens defeated opponents by technical fall and pin to move on. Garret Glick had a strong showing in a tough bracket and Jonas Sjodin rocked the house with a big 5-3 win to end the season.

Novice (11-12) and Senior (13-14) faced tough competition from neighboring clubs. Tyler Cooper, Jared Long, Austin Walkington, Charlie Young, Tim Weber, Austin Connelly and Trell Firman competed at Novice. Long, Walkington, and Connelly recorded pins for Grayslake on Sunday. 

Second year wrestler Ryan Fuller and rookie Stephen Simpson faced experienced wrestlers in the Senior Division. Fuller qualified for Sectionals with a third place showing.
