It was a beautiful day for baseball on our Opening Day!

Even with minimal practice time due to extensive April rain, both the Pirates and the D'Backs still looked great in their opening game! There were very few walks for either team which meant that both teams had great pitching and both teams were ready to swing the bat when hitting.

Jon, Grant, and Tristian all put in great efforts with pitching for the D'Backs.  All of the Pirates pitchers also pitched extremely well. The D'Backs all put in a solid defensive effort and made some smart plays knowing where to go with the ball (again even with limted practice). Hitting was also strong for both teams.

Comments:
Great Opening Day for both Teams.  All the boys were swinging the bat.  The pitchers had to deal with wet and muddy balls due to the water and mud behind home plate.  Thanks to the umps for trying to keep the balls clean.  Lesson Learned: bring a rag or towel to help keep the balls cleaned.

Team: GYBA-Sea Dogs   vs   GYBA-River Cats
Location: Alleghany Bronco - Grayslake, IL
  Score: 23 to 14
Comments:
It has been raining cats and dogs this spring and some new cats and dogs faced off on Friday April 29th. Two teams of fifth graders, the River Cats and the Sea Dogs played Grayslake Youth Baseball on an evening when the scores went up and the temperatures went down.

The first pitch was a pleasant mid 60s temperature with a breeze from the east.  The River Cats Tommy led off the game making it on base to then scored when driven in by Mark Kegan for an RBI.

The second half of the first inning moved the Sea Dogs out front by thirteen runs. The teams shared many things including red jerseys and grey pants.  They also had some well placed throws and fantastic stretches for outs at first base and 12 stolen bases for each team.

Dramatic highlights included the River Cat's Tanner in an airborne collision which he brushed off and continued to play and a near circus quality aerobatic move when the Sea Dogs Josh Piggott caught a fly ball while he himself was crossing the infield and mid-air.  A line drive back to the River Cats pitcher was a remarkable play as well.

The River Cats showed patience at the plate and the game yielded 22 walks for them to the 13 walks the Sea Dogs had.

The River Cats threatened in the forth when they managed 15 at bats, but the Sea Dogs defense held them to 9 runs.

The fans appreciated the game wrapping up as the temperature and sun had dropped and the wind picked up making for a chilly finish to the first game of the season for these fine players on both teams.

After four an a half innings with a game time that ran about three hours the final score: River Cats 14 and Sea Dogs 23.

River Dogs break out the heavy lumber to open the season with a win over the Mudhens.

After the visiting birds from Toledo pecked and scratched their way to an early lead in the opening frame, the Dogs seized control behind back-to-back 2-baggers by Declan Peterson, Carter Maiden, and Mike Andrews and a solid shot by Anthony Bauer.

The resilient Hens battled back, regaining the lead behind hits by Jack Fortman, Chris Ayers, and Andrew Kemnetz. Backed up against the fence, the Dogs responded, scoring 7 after 2 outs, behind Declan Delahunty (2H), Maiden (2H), Andrews (3H), Bauer (2H) and a solid at bat by Justin Buechner. Dylan Sulzer kept the Dogs on top, blanking the Hens over 2 innings while striking out 4 and fielding his position like a young Greg Maddux. Riding momentum, the Dogs padded the lead with some smart at bats by John Mutter, Robert McNeilly, and Zach Cashmore, whose hits to the right side plated three runs.

As expected the fighting Hens threatened in the fifth, with the big blow being a bases loaded double by Alex Urbanik (2 2B). But, closer Carter Maiden, backed by several strong defensive plays by fist sacker, Dylan Sulzer,  was able to shut down the Hens in order in the final frame to secure the win.
