Join North Lacrosse and See the Country

Young Grayslake North lacrosse team enjoys Florida trip.

This is one boys lacrosse team that travels. This tradition of taking spring break trips started in 2008 at Grayslake North. A pair of Rutgers University graduates, head coach Brad Fish and assistant Ed Trabulsy, decided to add spring trips to the Knights schedule.

In 2008, their team hit North Carolina and a visit to Duke University. After that, it was:

  • 2009: St. Louis
  • 2010: South Florida and some tough competition.
  • 2011: Ft. Lauderdale and two impressive wins.

There is a hint that the Knights might try the West Coast next season and San Diego.

The Knights had their alarm clocks set early (4 a.m.) on March 29. That's when they met at North for their trip to Midway Airport.

They were greeted in Ft. Lauderdale by 80 degree weather.

"The sun screen was in abundance,'' Fish said. "The boys from the windy city looked as though they hadn’t seen the sun in more than six months."

It wasn't all hanging around the pool. Team captains Patrick Walker and Josh Kortenkamp organized a two-mile run on the beach. That seemed to work as the first game of this spring trip was a 17-5 hammering of North Broward Prep.

Colin Chatten had a field day with 7 goals and an assist. AJ Fish was also everywhere on the field with 4 goals and 7 assists. Also helping out were Matt Schlagetter (3 goals, 3 assists), Patrick Walker (2 goals), Jack Mattea (goal). Dylan Cotter notched 6 saves in goal.

Game two also went well as North pounded American Heritage Del Rey 14-2. Chatten continued his  scoring barrage with 3 goals and an assist. Also joining in the scoring fun were Fish (2 goals, 2 assists), Walker (2 goals, assist), Brandon Bong (2 goals) and Mattea (2 goals).

The competition stepped up in the finale. Pine Crest breezed over the Knights 20-4.

"The Knights were outmanned by both Pinecrest as well as the sun gods and took it on the chin,'' said coach Fish.

The victors in this match hosted a pizza and pasta party after the game. The Knights caught their 6 a.m. flight back to Chicago in time for some snow showers.

Despite the weather change, North  routed Mundelein 16-5 on Monday.

Also helping out the Knights this spring will be: Rich Downs, Josh Cokefair, Farhan Khan, Chris Lizotte, Dave Collins, Zack Johnson, Max Spencer, Kevin Carter, Joey Amsler, Bryce Hermsen, Shane Pech, Ben Smith and Michael Divita.
