Knight Time for Sports

Reviewing the season through Dec. 21 for basketball and wrestling at Grayslake North High School.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL:

The Knights are off to a great start. They are 5-2 overall and won their only conference game against Cary Grove 55-46. The team is really starting to gel with a great blend of seniors and juniors, several who gained varsity experience as freshmen or sophomores.

Grayslake North 49 - Lakes 42
- Zack Krupp - 13 points; 11 Rebounds (second career double-double)
- Danny Mateling - 11 points

Coach Todd Grunloh: "A great defensive effort in which we held Lakes, a very athletic team, to a season low 42 points. We knew going in that Lakes had several legitimate scoring threats but as usual our kids did the work on the defensive end and were able to overcome shooting only 29 percent from the floor. We had very balanced scoring from our starters, who accounted for all of our points, Zack Krupp (13), Danny Mateling (11), A.J. Fish (9), Nick Carmody (8), and Mark Hall (8)."

Grayslake North 54 - Antioch 44
- Danny Mateling - 20 points (career high)
- A.J. Fish - 14 points

Coach Grunloh: "Danny Mateling scored a career high 20 points, 16 in the first half, as we jumped out to a 15-4 first-quarter lead. Give Antioch credit they continued to battle back and every time it seemed as if though we may put the game out of reach they were able to put together a run and keep the game in reach. A.J. Fish had 14 points and went 4-4 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter."

NEXT UP: Grant Holiday Tourney at Grant High School in Fox Lake. On 12/27 vs. Lakes (4:00); 12/28 vs. Northridge Prep (2:30); 12/29 vs. Richmond-Burton (4:00); 12/30 vs. TBA (TBA). On Jan. 4, the Knights travel to Jacobs. On Jan. 7, they hit the road to Woodstock North.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL:

The Lady Knights are charging after school records and that’s no small joust! They have reeled off a school record 10 consecutive wins since dropping their first three games of the season.

With an overall record of 10-3, they are also 2-0 in the Fox Valley Conference. Sharp shooting sophomore Kendall Detweiler has been setting school records with her 3-point shooting. Against Jacobs she knocked down seven from beyond the arc. She lit up North Chicago in the tournament for 30 points.

Senior center Joanna Guhl has been dominant on the boards. She set a school record with 17 rebounds against Woodstock North. The Knights defeated Marian Central last night in the championship game of the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic. The Lady Knights are led by head coach Jim Sarver and assisted by Troy Harper.

NEXT UP:

On Jan. 3, Grayslake North will host Hampshire. Then on Jan. 6, they travel to Woodstock. Both of these are conference games.

WRESTLING:

The mighty wrestlers of North own a 9-4 record in dual meets. They also took first place in the Richmond Burton Tournament. The Knights are 1-1 in conference matches having beat McHenry 30-21 and losing last week to perennial Fox Valley wrestling powerhouse Crystal Lake, 52-19. There is a lot of talent in this group with returning veterans and conference place winners like Angel Cabrera, Kasen Christiansen, Nick Klein, Jimmy Prince, and Stone Dax. The Knights are led by new head coach Ryan West and assisted by Larry Zimmerman.

NEXT UP:

The wrestlers head out to the Hampshire Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28. On Jan. 5, the Knights travel to Woodstock; on Jan. 6, they host Hampshire; and on Jan. 7, they host the Grayslake North Quad Meet.
