Knights In San Diego - Day 3

Highlights from San Diego by Josh Kortenkamp and Joey Amsler, the Grayslake North Varsity Lacrosse Captains. Learn how the team did in a tough battle against Granite Hills, who suffered a flagrant and illegal hit to the back and who ate the most waffles.

Day 3: March 28

Woke up early for early breakfast as usual. Today's special was waffles, of which goalie Eric York ate seven and a half. After breakfast the team returned to their respective rooms to prepare for practice.

A sigh of relief was simultaneously breathed by the team as we learned that today's practice would be just helmets and gloves, so suns out guns out would be in full effect. Today we would practice on a small grass field next to a school with country music playing to the delight of much of the team. Practice went well, and was ended by meeting another lacrosse team, the Coyotes, who hailed from Colorado.

After practice, and showers from some but not all, the team enjoyed some free time. Many went back to the mall, purchasing everything from Big League Chew bubble-gum and souvenir T-shirts to croakies for their newly purchased sunglasses. Some reports even say senior Bryce Hermsen and junior Danny McShane were spotted acquiring the phone numbers of several women at the mall whom they had just met. Others discovered peace once again in the pool and hot tub, and found themselves with fresh new sunburns.

After returning to our rooms early to rest for the game, the team began to mentally prepare ourselves. Today we were faced with a long bus-ride complete with trying to convince several sophomores one could see the rocky mountains from the bus. Additionally many members applied eye-black. Two favorites would be the mustache made by junior Brendan Walker, or the tribal pattern made by junior Farhan Khan. After applying our war paint the team stepped on the turf and was ready.

Tonight's game had a much different atmosphere as the level of play was not only higher, but we even found hecklers in the crowd superfanning against us. However, one wouldn't be able to tell based off of the ferocity of our play. Granite Hills struck first, but after that the goals began to fall easily for the Knights.

The defense clicked as a unit, with every member talking and shutting down their offender. Toughness was one word which could be used to describe senior captain Joey Amsler who was at the receiving end of a both flagrantly vicious and highly illegal hit to the back, from which he immediately got up from and continued to play. The precision shooting abilities of our players was on full display as the other team had a very strong goalie. Several players marked the scorecard, and as the clock winded down a score of 10-6 flashed in favor of the Knights.

After a hard-earned win, the Knights enjoyed a delicious Italian style dinner from Pernicano's restaurant. Three options were available to choose from being spaghetti, lasagna, or a meatball sandwich. Additionally sophomores Steven Hohensee and Freddie Williams  both ate a whole pepper each, and then chugged a glass of raspberry tea.

After a long day the team finally returned to the hotel. Many were found falling asleep in the elevator. And as we returned to rooms the team I'm sure went to bed with a smile as they looked forward to sleeping in and a day at the beach.
