Knights In San Diego - Day 4

Highlights from San Diego by Josh Kortenkamp and Joey Amsler, the Grayslake North Varsity Lacrosse Captains. A day of fun at the beach, complete with kayaking, sea lions and childhood games.

Day 4: March 28

Today was the day everyone had been looking forward too: the beach. The team not only enjoyed an extra two hours of sleep, but had the prospect of a day dedicated entirely to playing in the sand.

We arrived at La Jolla shores at roughly 11 a.m., and got down to business right away. Ultimate frisbee disks and footballs were tossed around and we seemed to be in our element. We then walked down the street to a local surf shop where we all got outfitted for wetsuits.

The choice was then presented between either surfing, boogie-boarding, or kayaking. Many jumped at the opportunity to surf, only to see their dreams crushed by the waves. A majority favorite seemed to be kayaking, however, as we paired off in twos for the kayaks.

We were able to kayak along the hills, looking in caves, and even view the majestic beauties known as sea lions. The sea lions would jump in the water with the kayakers, sometimes swimming right underneath their kayak.

After playing in the sand and surf, the team was exhausted. A local taco place catered to the beach, and the team enjoyed beef and chicken tacos shoreside. After eating, a huge game of Duck Duck Goose broke out, and the child inside every player came out for a little while. Some players were even so lucky as to take on the number 64 ranked best Bocci Ball player in the world, Mr. McGuinness.

The day ended as the team relaxed under the sunset. Many began to grimace as they touched their shoulders and foreheads, realizing they'd been fried underneath the sun. Regardless of the painful burn, everyone had a smile on their face. As we returned to our rooms, many turned in early after being drained of energy by the sun. The team looks forward to a tough game against Rancho Bernardo tomorrow.
