Matt's Mile & 5K Honors Grayslake Teen's Battle with Cancer

Community members, classmates, family and friends turned out for the second annual Matt's Mile & 5K on Oct. 7 in honor of Matt Hupp and to help other families who are also battling cancer.

Matt Hupp, a seventh-grade student at St. Gilbert School in Grayslake, was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and lost his battle with the awful disease at age 13. In honor of his love and dedication to sports, Matt's parents, Steve and Julie Hupp, created the 12 Oaks foundation which allows children in families battling cancer to engage in the sports and activities they enjoy.

On Oct. 7, the 12 Oaks Foundation sponsored Matt's Mile & 5K at Prarie Crossing. it included a kid's and adult's one mile run and a 5k. Participants included those who knew, loved and were inspired by Matt.

Many of his fellow classmates ran in his honor. This event brought the community of St. Gilbert together with other groups and families for a common cause: to fight cancer, to allow children struggling with cancer to continue playing sports, and to honor and continue the legacy of Matt Hupp.
