BOYS’ BASKETBALL:

12/27-12/29/11 State Farm Classic Tournament

In Bloomington over the winter break, the Rams won their first game against Rock Island 54-47. They then fell to Springfield 50-48, defeated Rockton Hononegah 63-50, before losing to North Chicago 84-67.

Offensively, the Rams were led by Senior guard Jordan Taylor who averaged 20 points per game and senior center Casey Boyle who averaged 15. Junior guard Danny Reed averaged 8.75 points per game and Sayvonte McWilliams averaged 7.75. As a team, the Rams scored an average of 58 points per game but gave up nearly 58 points per game defensively.

"I have been very pleased with the effort we have played with this year, especially in our last 6 games," said Coach Moe. "We have played some very good teams, beaten four of them and were competitive in the other two. We need to continue to improve defensively, as well as rebound more aggressively and take better care of the ball offensively."

The Rams defeated Cary Grove on Wednesday 53-30. Grayslake Central dominated the game for three entire quarters before resting the starters and giving valuable time to the bench players. The Rams led 30-12 at the half and never looked back. Jordan Taylor and Tyler Smith led the team with a dozen points apiece and Casey Boyle contributed 11.

"Jordan Taylor has been very consistent in making outside shots, handling the ball and playing defense," Moe said. "He has taken over games when needed and really matured in his patience offensively. Casey Boyle has been a true big man inside. He has dominated games by his presence in the post, rebounded extremely well and passed the ball to open teammates when he gets double-teamed. Sayvonte McWilliams has taken over as our point guard. He has handled pressure well, gotten us into our offense, and put pressure on the other team’s point guard bringing the ball up the floor. Tyler Smith has been a force in transition. He has used his speed and athleticism to get fast break points and rebound. Danny Reed has been consistent in making outside shots to help open the floor for Casey in the post and Jordan, Sayvonte and Tyler to dribble penetrate."

In assessing the progress of the team so far this season, Moe said, "I really think our six main players have done a very good job up to this point and are all an integral part of what we do and why we have been successful. Sean Geary has really been our unsung hero. He comes in off of the bench, is capable of guarding any player on the floor and does all of the little things that help make teams successful."

The Rams are now 9-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

The Rams lost to Dekalb 55-16 and Rock Island 57-18 but recorded a victory over Ottawa 54-24. Dylan Hay, Sean Keever, and Jimmy Molitor were all undefeated in the tournament and the dual meets over break.

"We have had a decent start to our season," said Head Coach Dan Catanzaro. "The boys put in a lot of work over winter break and we are working on peaking at the conference and regional tournaments in a few weeks."
