Rams Take Care of Business at North Chicago

Scarbro and club get off to a great start on Tuesday.

It is a good trivia question: What are the three teams that have registered wins against Grayslake Central this year? Here's a hint. All are Class 4A scho0ls.

1. Libertyville (top seed in the Mundelein Sectional)

2. Maine South (top seed in the Maine East Sectional)

3. Cary-Grove (top seed in the Jacobs Sectional)

The magical season of the Rams (25-3) goes on. Back in 3A basketball, Central met a North Chicago team that had handled Grayslake North in a regional opener on Monday. Plus the Warhawks were playing on their home floor on Tuesday night.

Put it this way, Central senior Alex Scarbro had more points than the Warhawks did after one quarter.  It was 26-8 heading to the second quarter. Central never really let North Chicago into this game and rolled to a 60-42 regional win.

Central and Antioch will meet for the regional crown on Thursday night Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m.

"Antioch is a decent team,'' noted Central coach Steve Ikenn. "We have to be able to handle some of their pressure."

Ikenn was pleased to see his club get off to a good start at North Chicago.

"North Chicago had a really nice game with North,'' he said. "It was real important that we came out with intensity and fire."

It was about all over by halftime. The Rams led 40-17 at the break.

"North Chicago is an athletic team,'' Ikenn said. "They play hard. But we did what we were supposed to do."

Scarbro led a balanced attack with 16 points. Skyler Jessop checked in with 15 points. Rebekah Llorens added 12 points.

"This was a good tune up for the playoffs,'' he said. "I still think we need to handle the ball better and not allow so many offensive rebounds."

As the Rams prepare for the Antioch game on Thursday, they know the Sequoits have a special player in Andi Potkonjak. She is a strong player with a good shooting touch.

Ikenn watched as Antioch fell behind rival Lakes. The Sequoits rallied for a 49-40 victory. Potkonjak scored 22 points.

"She's a nice player,'' he said. "She can hit those outside shots. Antioch was down by 12 or 13 points and chipped away."
