Rivalry Game Goes to North 12-10

Paust, Fish and Chatten stand out in exciting lacrosse match.

Naturally, the rivalry game was close. Both Grayslake North and Central held leads when the two lacrosse teams met last week. So who were the heroes of North's 12-10 win over the Rams?

Some of the credit goes to North's defense. North coach Brad Fish made note of Dylan Cotter, Bryce Hermsen, Shane Pech and Kevin Carter.

"This group continues to give the opposing offense problems in the 6-on-6 aspect of the game,'' Fish said. "As well as in transition, where their poise outweighs their years."

Fish admitted his defenders didn't really have an answer for Central's midfielder Jake Paust.

"He was all over the field,'' Fish said, "and showed why he is one of the top midfielders in the state."

Paust finished his day with 4 goals and 2 assists.

North's AJ Fish matched Paust with 4 goals. That scoring machine known as Colin Chatten, added a hat trick. That last goal made it 45 goals this season as he hunts down the school record for most goals. Also checking in with a hat trick was North's Matt Schlagetter. Rich Downes added two goals to the North attack.

North managed to out-shoot the Rams 48-22 which meant both goalies were under attack. It was a credit to Central goalie Jimmy Soto that this game didn't get out of hand.

Recap: North earned its eighth win of the campaign Saturday with a 17-3 rout of York. Chatten went over the 50-goals mark with 5 goals. Chris Lizotte returned to the lineup, following an injury, and posted a hat trick. Also helping on the offensive side of the ball were Fish (2 goals, 4 assists), Patrick Walker (2 goals, assist) and Schlagetter (3 goals, 2 assists).

Goalie Dylan Cotter helped stop York's offense. North's defense, led by Hermsen, Pech, Ben Smith and Michael Mattea, was nearly flawless.

Coach Fish also credited his midfielders. That group includes Rich Downes, Joey Amsler and Dave Collins. Also helping disrupt the York team were Farhan Khan, Josh Kortenkamp and Michael DiVita.

"They were all over the field turning York over time and time again,'' Fish said.

Central (5-2) had another hat trick from Paust on Tuesday. He was joined in the three-goal parade by Colton Brunk and Bryan Clancy. Central edged Mundelein 11-10. Central coach Pete Olszewski credited the play of goaltender Thomas Halloran especially in the second half. Lee Brown also played well on defense.

Also checking in with goals in this close win were Nick Hermes and Peter Ota. Brunk had  a pair of assists and Kyle Engdahl added an assist.

On Thursday, Central senior Nick Hermes set a school record by scoring 8 goals in Central's 15-13 win over Deerfield. In fact, he broke his own record of 6 set a year ago against Schaumburg.
