Event, Tree Raffle Promotes Ash Tree Replacement

The Arbor Day celebration at the Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve in Grayslake included a raffle of 80 new trees.

About 80 free trees were raffled off Saturday during an Arbor Day Celebration held at Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve in Grayslake.

The event was held by the Lake Country Forest Preserves to teach residents about the importance of planting a variety of tree species to replace the ash trees being killed off by emerald ash borer (EAB) infestations.

Expert advice on proper tree selection, tree planting and the problems caused by EAB was supplied by Forest Preserve arborists. Trees for the raffle were supplied through a U.S. Forest Service grant that is also providing about 2,000 trees to plant in forest preserves throughout Lake County.
