How much snow will we get? Read on.

If you were planning on finishing your Christmas shopping this weekend, you might want to get out early—or even rethink those plans completely.

A winter storm with the potential for ice and snow accumulation across far northern Illinois is on its way.

winter storm watch remains in effect from 6 p.m. Dec. 21 to 6 p.m. Dec. 22.

National Weather Service Chicago officials, in their multimedia weather briefing Friday morning, said this moisture-laden storm system will result in a "moderate to heavy precipitation event … across the area Saturday through Sunday."

The area with the greatest potential for snow and ice accumulations is far northern Illinois, including Lake and McHenry Counties, according to the weather briefing.

"If enough cold air overspreads northern Illinois, heavy snow and ice could be a result," according to the National Weather Service Chicago.

The National Weather Service's forecast for Grayslake on Saturday shows a 30 percent chance of precipitation, with a chance of snow and sleet after 1 p.m. Saturday night could bring 3 to 7 inches of snow. The chance of precipitation Saturday night and Sunday is 100 percent.
