What was the final score against Waubonsie Valley on Saturday?
The Grayslake North lacrosse team finished off their 12th win of the season with a 16-2 thrashing of Waubonsie Valley at North High School. The defense was led by Eric York in goal with 9 saves. Ben Smith continued his stellar play on the defensive side of the ball as did Kevin Carter, Ian Pearce, Jake Lamb and Effrain Rodriguez. AJ Fish added to his state leading scoring with 4 goals on the day while handing out 6 assists. That gives Fish 109 points on 56 goals and 53 assists. Brendan Walker chipped in with 4 goals and an assist, and Freddie Williams added 3 goals. The Knights have improved to 11-4 for the season.
The Knights started fast vs. Lake Zurich for the win on Thursday night. North opened a halftime lead of 8-2 and didn’t look back for the 13-5 final score. The Knights had 7 different goal scorers on the night, with AJ Fish leading the way with 4 goals and 3 assists. Jack Mattea, Alex Fletcher, and David Collins each had 2 goals, and Brendan Walker, Freddie Williams and Spencer Davis added 1 apiece. Brendan Walker added 3 assists as well. Eric York was tremendous in goal with 10 quality saves. Ben Smith, Ian Pearce, Shane Pech, Kevin Carter and Jake Lamb were steady all night long on the defensive side of the ball. Grayslake North overcame a slow start to win a tough game with Warren 11-3 Wednesday Night in Gurnee. AJ Fish paced the Knights with 5 goals and 3 assists. Brendan Walker chipped in 3 goals and had 2 assists as well. Other scorers for Grayslake North were Jack Mattea with 2 goals and David Collins with 1. Fish and Walker continue to lead the way for North. Fish leads all scorers in the state with 92 points on 48 goals and 44 assists. Walker is also near the leaders with 46 points on 27 goals and 19 assists. The Illinois High School Association approved new safety rules Wednesday to limit tackling in youth football practice in an effort to reduce head injuries, reported the Daily Herald. In March, a controversial bill sponsored by State Rep. Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills) proposing to limit the number of days players could have full contact hitting practice (twice a week) failed in the House committee. The new IHSA policy calls for coaches to gradually increase the time players can participate in preseason practice, along with the number of protective pads they can wear. The Knights from Grayslake North improved to 9-4 with a win over Evanston. Ben Smith was all over the field for Grayslake North with 6 ground balls and played relentless defense all night. Eric York was fantastic in goal with 13 saves. Rounding out the defensive unit were Shane Pech, Ian Pearce, Kevin Carter and Jake Lam. The offense was led by AJ Fish and Jack Mattea, who were all over the field. Logan Morita, Spencer Davis and Freddie Williams were solid, as was Tyler Lyon. Avon Township Youth Baseball recently competed in its first tournament of the season.
Spring was in the air last weekend as Avon Township Youth Baseball (ATYB) hosted its first travel baseball tournament of the season at the grounds of the old Softball City in Hainesville. Participating teams not only took advantage of the beautiful spring like weather, but the updated facilities and fields as well. At the 10U level: The battle between Lake in the Hills and the Algonquin Storm provided a boisterous crowd of spectators, second to a major league stadium. Spectators on both sides cheered in unison as the game drew to an end. The seesaw battle between these two teams ended in a 5-4 victory for the Algonquin Storm. The University of Findlay's softball player Carly Borders was named offensive player of the week in her conference.
Carly Borders, a Grayslake North High School alum, was honored for her collegiate softball skills. The University of Findlay announced that Borders was recognized April 22 as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Borders led the Oilers to a perfect 8-0 record last week by hitting .454. She drove in 13 runs during the week and scored 12 more. She also hit three home runs, recorded three triples and walked five times. The Lake Villa native is hitting .347 on the season with eight home runs and 33 runs batted in. North Knights use multiple scorers to soundly defeat the Mundelein Mustangs.
The Grayslake North Knights beat host Mundelein 16-2 at the Mustangs' home field this week. Grayslake North was led by 10 different goal scorers, with Brendan Walker leading the way with three goals. Freddie Williams, Farhan Khan, and AJ Fish each added two goals apiece. The defense was again led by Shane Pech, Ben Smith, Ian Pearce, Jake Lamb and Eric York in goal. The Knights jumped out to a 14-1 halftime lead as Mundelein played tough throughout the second half.
