North Lacrosse Headed For State Champion Match

North handles Lake Zurich 15-6 on Thursday night June 2.

Look out Waubonsee Valley or O'Fallon. The team standing between those clubs and a Class B State Championship is on quite a roll. That team is Grayslake North. On Thursday night at home, the Knights notched their school record 16th win of the season and in the process ended Lake Zurich's season. It wasn't even close as the Knights prevailed 15-6. "If we continue to play relentless lacrosse, we should be able to play with anyone,'' said Brad Fish, North's head coach. "The Lake Zurich coaching staff has done a fantastic job with that group of athletes, and for us to play as well as we have says quite a lot." In the last six matches, the Knights have outscored opponents 82-25. Thursday's match was no exception. The Bears of Lake Zurich had …

North Softball Team Making History

Knights pin a sectional loss on 25-game winner Vernon Hills.

Everyone seems surprised that the Grayslake North softball team is alive and well and headed for the sectional final come Saturday at Central High School. On the other hand, isn't this the same Knights team that won 22 games this spring? Is this the same team with the prized fire-baller in Kristi Gandy? And the slugger in fellow sophomore Kelsey Borders? And that slick fielding shortstop Jordyn Bowen, yet another sophomore? It seems this team will be good for years to come. On Wednesday afternoon at Central, the young Knights took on a veteran pitcher in Vernon Hills' Megan Meline. And when this hard thrower fanned four of the first six Knights, North, under the direction of head coach Molly Jones, decided to change its game plan. "We …

Drive One for Your School This Sunday

Test drive a Ford and earn cash for GNHS Athletics Booster Club.

Test drive a Ford and earn money for your school. That is the idea behind a unique fund-raiser sponsored by Grayslake North High School Athletic Booster Club. Drive One for UR School will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 15 at GNHS north parking lot, 1925 N. Route 83, Grayslake. The cars are provided through Gurnee Ford-Lincoln-Mercury, 18834 W. Grand Avenue, Gurnee. The goal is to get 300 people to test drive a Ford during the event. One person per household who is 18 years or older must complete some paperwork. Then, each driver can take a 15 minute test drive. For this, the school will earn $20 per test drive, or up to $6,000 total during the four hour event. They will not be trying to sell the cars because it is Sunday and …

Students Praised for Athletic Accomplishments Catherine Finger, District 127 superintendent, opened the recent board meeting with praise for both Grayslake Central and North’s student athletes and newly approved tenured faculty. While there has been much controversy at the schools lately due to three wrestling coaches from North abruptly resigning, Finger put the focus on the positive and celebrated successful students and teachers. “This is a very, very, very special evening,” she said. When thanking students for their participation she said: “We’re so proud of you, so fortunate to have you representing us.” Grayslake Central High School Wrestlers Recognized as State Qualifiers Grayslake Central Principal Syd Klocke introduced Senior …

Staszczak Returns at Shortstop for North

Knights' baseball team has high hopes for spring season.

Grayslake North baseball hasn't had to replace its shortstop for going on four years. Solid-fielding Kevin Staszczak has been a fixture at the position since his freshman year. Well, he did take a short break late last season. There was that late-season game where he took a ball directly to the choppers. "After he took the ball in the mouth, he still tried to finish the play,'' recalled North coach Andy Strahan. "With blood everywhere and his two front teeth missing, he seemed to be a little surprised when he had to leave the game and get to the dentist." The 2011 baseball season has already kicked off. Staszczak drilled a homer and had two other hits. His 3 RBIs were helpful in a 16-1 romp over Grant on Thursday. One thing is for sure. …
