Just in time for March Madness, the 12 Oaks Foundation will host its Third Annual Hoops for Hope tournament March 16 and 17 at Grayslake North High School. Each spring the tournament draws more than 500 basketball players and 100 teams to the court for some 3-on-3 action. Open to all players from fourth-graders through adults, the event raises funds to help children in families coping with cancer and financial hardships. Blood Drive New this year, the friendly competition at Hoops for Hope will also bring about some real bloodshed—off the court, that is. The organizers have teamed up with LifeSource to host a Matt Hupp Memorial Blood Drive on-site during the first day of the tournament, March 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To donate blood, fans…

What a good sport. Matt's Mile participant John Breen agreed to wear a bright pink running outfit to raise more than $1,500 in donations for the 12 Oaks Foundation.
Matt's Mile participant John Breen was electric on Oct. 5, beating his personal best in the 5K. Perhaps it was the power of that hot pink running outfit he wore at the challenge of his neighbors in exchange for donations to the 12 Oaks Foundation. "I felt very fortunate to be able to do this for 12 Oaks and the kids and families that 12 Oaks helps," said Breen. "Personal record, raised lots of money for a great cause (more than $1,500) and had a blast doing all of it. That is what all of this is about!" About 500 residents participated in the 3rd annual Matt's Mile at Prairie Crossing on Oct. 5. "It was a little chilly, but it went pretty good. We raised $25,000 to $30,000," said Julie Hupp, who created the 12 Oaks Foundation with her …

John Breen of Grayslake is a great sport. After a challenge from his neighbors, Breen has agreed to don a sparkly pink outfit to participate in tomorrow's 3rd annual Matt's Mile and 5K to help raise money for the 12 Oaks Foundation.
Grayslake resident John Breen will be "pretty" easy to spot at Matt's Mile and 5K in Prairie Crossing Friday. He'll be the guy running in the long-sleeved sparkly pink leotard get-up. It's all for a great cause, to raise money for the 12 Oaks Foundation, created by Steve and Julie Hupp after the death of their 13-year-old son Matt in 2009, from Birkitt's Lymphoma. More than 30 residents have pledged about $1,200 to the 12 Oaks Foundation to see Breen make his colorful run. Pretty in pink The whole thing started with a light-hearted announcement on a neighborhood e-mail bulletin--then it snowballed. Kim Thoede, one of Breen's neighbors, contacted Patch with the amusing story. "A neighbor posted on our community e-mail list that her young …

Matt Hupp was just 13 when he passed away from Burkitt's Lymphoma in 2009. He would have turned 17 on Oct. 8. To honor Matt's memory and his love for all sports, Matt's Mile and 5K will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 in Prairie Crossing to benefit the 12 Oaks Foundation, which was established in 2010 by the Hupp family. The foundation raises money to support other families coping with cancer and to help cover the costs of sports programs, extracurricular activities and camps for children with cancer as well as their siblings. "He'd say you're working too hard," said Matt's mom, Julie Hupp, when asked what Matt would think of all the work they have done with Matt's Mile and the 12 Oaks Foundation. "I think he'd be proud and honored over …

The 12 Oaks Foundation will host the 3rd annual Matt's Mile and 5K in Prairie Crossing on Friday, Oct. 5. On-line registration ends at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 3.
In early October on the trails near Lake Aldo Leopold, you can see purple aster in bloom, towering yellow cup plants and fiery red sumac, and the multicolored streaks of hundreds of runners sprinting through the prairie. Now in its third year, Grayslake’s annual Matt’s Mile and 5K Run/Walk will take place Friday, Oct. 5 at 5 p.m. in the Prairie Crossing subdivision. All proceeds benefit the 12 Oaks Foundation. Matt’s Mile is named after Matthew Hupp, a Grayslake youth who died in 2009 from Burkitt’s Lymphoma, a rare form of cancer that typically targets children. After watching their son’s painful struggle and seeing its effect on their family, Steve and Julie Hupp decided to start a foundation to help other people facing a cancer …

The second annual Hoops for Hope 3-on-3 basketball tournament will take place March 17 and 18 at Grayslake North High School. Teams of four or more players, fifth-graders through adults, will compete for bragging rights and more importantly, to support the 12 Oaks Foundation, a nonprofit charity dedicated to helping children in families coping with cancer. “We’re excited to put on a community event during the height of hoops season that allows adults and kids to play some ball in a fun environment,” said Steve Hupp, who founded 12 Oaks along with his wife, Julie. The foundation serves as a tribute to their son, Matthew, who died of Burkitt’s Lymphoma in 2009 at age 13. Matt loved playing sports and developed many of his strengths through …
