'Whirled of Peace' Pinwheel Project Helps GMS Students Honor 9/11 Anniversary

While students remember 9/11 only from history class, they honor the memory by making pinwheels for peace.

A more peaceful world is the goal of the "Whirled of Peace" program at Grayslake Middle School. “I was inspired by the International Day of Peace, which is Sept. 21. It was featured in School Arts Magazine,” said Chris Kocher, art teacher at Grayslake Middle School, who came up with the pinwheel idea for students. “On Sept. 21, 2010, there were 3.5 million pinwheels spinning around the world with 40 countries participating,” Kocher said. The pinwheel represents a “Whirled of Peace” for an anti-bullying and anti-violence campaign on the International Day of Peace. Grayslake Middle School adopted the idea to honor the tenth anniversary of the attacks on 9/11/01. Each student was asked to make a pinwheel during their specials class, which…

Fantastic display and moving tribute celebrating life and inspiring peace. My girls and I have driven by both this and the tribute to Hero's at Avon School to soak in the thoughtfulness, appreciation, and generosity the kids of this community have shown. Thank you D46 staff, kids, and community for remembering, honoring, and appreciating. This is what makes Grayslake awesome!   more ›

GNHS Goes Above and Beyond to Help Host 9/11 Memorial Event

Grayslake North's public service practicum class took the initiative to help local Cub Scout leaders plan a community memorial event to honor American heroes on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

“This event could bring the community together like 9/11 brought the country together,” says Jocelyn Martinez, 17, senior in the public service practicum class at Grayslake North High School. “It helps to remember that this is not necessarily for mourning, but an appreciation of what the fire, police, and military do for us every day.” Martinez spoke of the upcoming American Heroes Community Event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a special ceremony at noon Sunday, Sept. 11, at Grayslake North High School’s stadium. There will be family-friendly activities such as: Emily Weiss and Chris Kubic, teachers at Grayslake North High School, lead the public service practicum classes. This is Weiss’ first year teaching the class, since it is the first …

Returning to Ground Zero, Looking Ahead

As the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks approaches, area residents share their memories of that tragic day.

Nothing is as it once was. For those familiar with New York, returning to the site where the World Trade Center Towers once stood remains an unsettling reality. For Sonali Oberg, the events of that fateful day shed sadness on her memories. She grew up just outside of New York City, north of the Hudson River. Her next door neighbor, an employee at Cantor Fitzgerald, was killed on September 11. “I grew up with him and his kids. It’s just hard to even imagine.” Oberg said. “I still think that ten years later it doesn’t feel real; like it didn’t really happen.” Oberg travels to New York monthly for work and still feels the attacks are just a dream. “I have to go to Ground Zero and see that the towers aren’t there just to make sure it really …

Love Thy Neighbor: How to Help Families With a Deployed Service Member

With many men and women in a the armed forces, it is up to the community to help our fellow neighbors. Here are some tips on how to do just that.

The best advice for those who really want to help a neighbor when a family member is deployed with the military? Be proactive and be specific. “It’s one thing for people to make offers such as ‘call if I can help out in any way’ which is appreciated; however, most people won’t take someone up on such an offer," says military wife Kirie Reveron, formerly of Lincolnshire, who now lives in Rhode Island. She suggested offering specific help instead. "If someone were to bring their teenager over and say, ‘Susie will watch the kids while I take you out for a cup of coffee and some adult time,’ or even, ‘I’ve hired a baby sitter for the morning so you can do your errands and get your hair cut,’" Reveron said, "something along those lines, where …

Local Collector to Share Items, Memories from the World Trade Centers

A local exhibit is expected to spark conversation and reflection about 9/11.

Items and images from the World Trade Center in New York City will be displayed at the Grayslake Heritage Center in honor of the 10th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001. Jim Rogers of Third Lake worked at the World Trade Center during the 1970’s. He has returned several times following their collapse on 9/11 to visit Ground Zero and other memorials. Over the decades, Rogers has accumulated a variety of artifacts and images and will showcase them at the Heritage Center over the coming months. The new display will be unveiled on August 31 when Rogers will talk about his experiences in New York. “We tend to forget with time how much those events had an impact on us,” Rogers said as he recounted the slides he plans to show during…

I have "AS BUILT" CADD drawings of the World Trade Centers from 1996. These drawings are more detailed than an architects drawing. I have floppy discs with more information on them too. I know this is history-It is every floor, office, bathrooms, closets ect. Every square inch of these pristine historical sites. I am looking to sell them. The business that did the drawings for an architectural …   more ›

9/11 Memorial Event Open To All Lake County Residents

A large, community 9/11 memorial event at Grayslake North High School will also pay tribute to a father before his deployment to Afghanistan.

“It was the kids’ idea to try and fill a football stadium with people to honor those who serve our country every day,” said Michele Bauman, Cub Master of Pack #91 in Grayslake. “With the 10th anniversary of 9/11 approaching, we want to be sure those serving know how proud we are of them, and that they are not forgotten.” The countywide event started out as a going away party for Ira Fain, FC1 (Petty Officer First Class) in the U.S. Navy, who is the Den Leader for his son Cyrus’ Cub Scout Pack in Grayslake. Ira is being deployed to Afghanistan in late September. Then Cub Master Bauman realized there are other parents serving in the war and back here at home, and so thought, why not honor them all? “They’re risking their lives for us. We …
