Screens for Teens visits its first college campus to test students for undiagnosed cardiac conditions - Part Two.
Bringing the Screens for Teens event to the College of Lake County was not initially on the books. While the target age for sudden cardiac death is between 17 and 22, the Max Schewitz Foundation had tested only high school students until it offered the program at College of Lake County on Sept. 14. Michelle Grace, College of Lake County’s director of health services, began her mission to bring the testing to college students when her daughters were screened at their high school three years ago. “I think if we can even find one person who we help out of 1,000, it is well worth it,” Grace said. She helped apply for a grant from the College of Lake County Foundation, which came through this year in the form of more than $6,000. “Obviously …

Screens for Teens visits its first college campus to test students for undiagnosed cardiac conditions - Part One.
Five hundred students from the College of Lake County walked away from campus with more knowledge about their own heart health. The students recently received free electrocardiogram and echocardiogram tests as part of Screens for Teens, a program used to help identify young adults who are at risk of sudden cardiac death before it is too late. “These young adults are at a stage when they are taking responsibility for their own actions,” said Mary Beth Schewitz of Lake Bluff. “It is nice to see them taking action.” In 2005, Schewitz’s son Max died suddenly at the age of 20 from an undiagnosed cardiac arrhythmia. Max had no previous medical conditions or warning signs. Schewitz and her husband began the Max Schewitz Foundation to help prevent…

Screens for Teens events organized by the Max Schewitz Foundation are designed to help prevent sudden cardiac death in young people.
A total of 500 College of Lake County students will be offered a free heart screening Sept. 14 as part of the Max Schewitz Foundation’s Screens for Teens. The event is aimed at raising awareness of hidden and potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions in young adults. “Information is power and in this case may even save a life,” said Michelle Grace of the College of Lake County. In 2005, Max Schewitz of Lake Bluff helped his mom move a dresser out to the garage, and then went to work. The healthy 20-year-old later fainted. After he was revived, he had a friend drive him to an emergency room nearby to get checked out. Within moments of arriving at the hospital, Max went into fatal cardiac arrest. Max had no previous medical conditions …
