Grayslake's A3 CrossFit gym, which opened late summer, is nothing like what you'd expect. Here, it's stripped down and hardcore.
A3 CrossFit in Grayslake is not your typical gym experience. There are no rows beyond rows of treadmills, elliptical machines and stair-climbers. There are no TVs, no locker rooms, no towel service and certainly no juice bar. This is a 3,250 square-foot warehouse space with turf, 300 pound tires, atlas stones, a pull-up rig, chains, resistance bands, free weights and climbing ropes. The workout environment is stripped down, hardcore and produces results, said owner/trainer Jeremy Happel, who was an all-around high school athlete and football captain who helped lead his team to a Indiana 4A state championship in 2000. At A3 CrossFit, he said, "Your body doesn't get used to it. The intensity always changes, so you won't plateau." Also unlike…

The Fitness Pursuit in Grayslake is holding a fitness gear sale to benefit Connor Semenske, a baby fighting a rare and potentially fatal genetic disease.
The Fitness Pursuit in Grayslake Saturday is hosting a Fitness Resale for endurance athletes from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, April 21 in an effort to help raise money for the Crusade for Connor, a charity benefiting a little boy with a HLH, a rare and highly fatal genetic disease. The Fitness Resale is a chance to purchase some gently used workout gear and clothing. Proceeds benefit Crusade for Connor, a group that helps raise funds to pay for the care of little Connor Semenske of Milwaukee. Connor has HLH or Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis also known as hemophagocytic syndrome. The disease is one in which Connor's immune system is hyperactive and attacking his internal organs, according to his site on CaringBridge. What this means is that …

Another step on my journey towards weight loss and fitness.
I made it through the 10-week program at The Fitness Pursuit in Grayslake. I am very proud of that fact because it isn't easy. We tracked our food, we exercised for hours each day, we wore BodyBugg monitors to track our daily calorie burns, we walked at 5 a.m.... They never said it would be easy. But it is worth it. I have lost my first nearly 10 pounds of 2012. While I have many more to go, I am happy to be on a healthier path. What I loved most about the program was our coaches and the group support. We joked, we laughed, we encouraged each other to keep going, to keep improving. Coach Lauri and Coach Kelli pushed us, challenged us and held us up when we struggled. Some of the guys in the group had incredible results, losing between 30 …

My ongoing quest to lose weight and increase fitness.
I can see the finish line - or maybe not. What I have learned more than anything during this 10-week program at The Fitness Pursuit in Grayslake is that health, fitness and weight loss has to be a lifelong process. Think marathon, not sprint. It's not easy. In the past two weeks, I got up at 4:15 a.m. so I could join others from TFP programs for four mile walks at 5 a.m. I wear my BodyBugg all the time to track daily calories burned, steps taken and hours of workout. I log all my food. It still is frustrating that the scale doesn't seem to realize how hard I am working. Progress is excruciatingly slow. But my body fat dropped another four percent, my water intake is up, and the log of calories in versus calories out show efforts in right …

My journey towards fitness.
We are down to Crunch Time in the Lose 20/40 Pounds in 10 Weeks program at The Fitness Pusuit in Grayslake. We are just starting the final two weeks of the program and Coach Lauri Robinson wants to see us all put in the effort to get the most results out of this session. Everyone in the class is at a different fitness level, from the very fit working to improve performance in a triathalon to those of us who are...not so much fit. But we are all still working on getting better. I think that is the key. Start from wherever you are. Don't wait until you lose 20 pounds before you join a gym to lose the next 10. Just start today. Take that first step. So this week, I am taking steps. Lots of them. A few crazy people from TFP are meeting at 5 a.…

An update on my quest for fitness.
This was a much better week. I lost 3.2 pounds, bringing my total in the first month of the program at The Fitness Pursuit to 8 pounds down. My body fat percentage is down 3 percent. My water levels, measuring how hydrated I am, have increased, which is good. You may not be that impressed with these numbers. There is no "15 pounds in 7 days" results here. But honestly, I am thrilled. I am changing my thoughts about what constitutes success. I am not interested anymore in short-term, quick but short-lived results that come back as soon as you go off the program. This is a new mindset for me. I know how hard it is to actually work off a pound (3,500 calories). I have been literally working my butt off. And it will continue. I will continue …

Tracking my quest for fitness.
I hate the scale. And apparently, the feeling is mutual. I've been putting off writing this column since Monday night's class at The Fitness Pursuit. Let's just say my results on the scale were a little...off. I went up 0.6 pounds. (Insert inappropriate language here and loud screams here.) If you want to read the "I dropped 14 pounds in 3 days" story that is always on the cover of every woman's magazine, this ain't it. Unfortunately. I wish it was. But, wait a minute, no I don't. I am doing a lifestyle change. It won't be quick or easy. But it will be worth it. It will be long lasting. And that's what I want. I want to lose weight to improve my diabetes, to have my clothes fit better, to increase my energy and to look better during …

Tracking my progress in a quest to get fit.
This was a really good week for the whole group in the Lose 20-40 Pounds in 10 Weeks class at The Fitness Pursuit in Grayslake. Overall, Coach Lauri Robinson said the group lost 20.8 pounds this week, and has lost a total of 59.9 pounds in the first three weeks. For me, I lost 2.6 pounds this week, so it is moving in the right direction. I've lost 4.8 pounds in the first three weeks. I'm happy with that. Of course, I wish it was a huge, incredible number like "14 pounds in one week" as advertised on late-night infomercials. It would be great if that were possible or long-lasting, but I know that it is not. I am changing my attitudes for the long haul. What we are doing at TFP is breaking old habits of eating too much and moving too little…

Nick, I am a 47 year old man that was very athletic in my younger days. I have had very extensive knee surgery, hip surgery and elbow surgery. I spent a year in physical therapy and have been in my worst shape ever. I decided to try crossfit and asked my physical therapist for her approval. After meeting with them, she gave me a big thumbs up. My knees have never felt better. The trainers are …   more ›
