GNHS Grad Continues Good Work as College Freshman

Lauren Bryson, a 2011 graduate of Grayslake North High School, recently organized a food drive for a shelter near her Joliet college.

When University of St. Francis (USF) freshman Lauren Bryson, of Grayslake, saw the look on a five-year-old child's face when there wasn't enough for breakfast at the DayBreak shelter where she was volunteering in Joliet, it broke her heart. Bryson turned to fellow USF freshman Emma Bormet, who was also volunteering that day, and they immediately knew they had to do something. "The sad thing was that when the shelter ran out of food, the people waiting for their meal didn't seem surprised; they just accepted it," said Bormet, of New Lenox. "So many people need help, and when Lauren and I saw the pantry was just about bare we got an idea." Grayslake North Students Sleep Outside to Raise Homeless Awareness

Prior to the kick-off of their school food drive this week, nearly 40 GNHS juniors and seniors spent the cold and rainy night of Oct. 25 sleeping outside to raise awareness of homelessness in Lake County.

Only hours before 37 Grayslake North High School students spent the night of Oct. 25 sleeping in cardboard boxes or on garbage bags on the ground, the temperature was in the 70s. By nightfall, however, conditions were cold and wet from spotty rain showers and the temperature had plunged at least 30 degrees. "You're not going to get a good night's sleep," teacher Chris Kubic advised his students. It was for the best, though, said senior Emily Pahl. "We were expecting the night to be warm, but it's better this way because it will make the experience more real." For the sixth year, students enrolled in the Public Service Practicum classes of teachers Chris Kubic, Courtney Meyer and Emily Weiss slept outdoors overnight to experience what it …
