Magic Show Fundraiser for Grayslake Couple Adopting Third African Child

A fundraiser for the Vagnoni family of Grayslake, "The Magic of Adoption," will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Lakeland Church in Gurnee. The family-friendly event will feature performances by three area entertainers.

Three years ago, Mike and Amy Vagnoni of Grayslake adopted two Ethiopian brothers following a lengthy, nerve-wracking and life-changing process that tested their strength, but rewarded them with love. "We are humbled and blessed," said Amy of the couple's sons, 7-year-old John Eyob, and 6-year-old Ryan Ephrem. Now, the Vagnonis are doing it all over again, to give another child the opportunity for a better life. They began the process to adopt a third African child in October 2011. Just this week, said Amy, they learned their family would be blessed with another son, an 18-month-old boy from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, located in central Africa. The Vagnonis will travel to Africa this summer to take their new son, who they will …

Grayslake Queens Help With Jewel-Osco's Giving Thanks Program

The Grayslake Queens asked shoppers at the Grayslake Jewel-Osco to give to less fortunate families.

Shoppers at Jewel-Osco seeking ingredients for their Thanksgiving meals also opened their wallets and their hearts to help local families in need. The four 2011 Grayslake Queens asked shoppers to get involved with the Giving Thanks fundraiser. “The point of this is to give meals to families in our local communities,” said Miss Grayslake Elizabeth Blasko, 17. “It is great because it stays local and helps people right here, so people are really responsive to it.” The Giving Thanks program helps local Lake County families who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford a traditional Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. Shoppers donate to the program, and Jewel-Osco uses the donations to provide full holiday meals to PLAN, a nonprofit organization in …

Sixth Annual AHC Walkathon Slated For Sunday

Kiley Andrasco and her family, friends and supporters will be some of the participants in the fundraiser.

The sixth annual 2011 Chicago Walk for AHC will be held at Paulus Park in Lake Zurich from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Sept. 18. The walk is a fundraising and awareness-raising event organized largely by parents, relatives and friends of children who are afflicted with AHC, or alternating hemiplegia of childhood, a neurological disorder that’s so rare, there are only three or four children in the surrounding area who are known to have it. The event was started in 2006 by the godparents of Emma Platt, who is now 9 years old and has AHC. Ten-year-old Kiley Andrasco, whose story was told in Lake Zurich Patch in January, also has AHC, and her parents are instrumental in the success of the annual walk. Kiley’s mother, Kelly, is on the organizing …

Local Girl Battling Rare Disorder

Kiley Andrasco is just one of 600 people worldwide to have been diagnosed with alternating hemiplegia of childhood.

Kiley Andrasco is one of just 600 people worldwide who have been diagnosed with alternating hemiplegia of childhood, or AHC, a disease whose enigmatic nature is largely due to its rarity. In fact, AHC wasn’t even acknowledged or recognized by the established medical community until 1971, which means that there’s been less than four decades worth of study and research. Kiley's parents, Gene and Kelly, went through a number of twists and turns, as well as some blind alleys, before Kiley eventually was diagnosed with AHC. Right after she was born, she began experiencing AHC episodes, which are similar in nature to epileptic seizures. Her parents consulted a neurologist when Kiley was 3 months old, and he diagnosed her as having epilepsy, a …
