The Village of Grayslake will hold a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, prior to the start of the regular board meeting at 7 p.m., to discuss seeking competitive pricing related to garbage and recycling collection for businesses.

As a result of a survey of local businesses conducted by the Grayslake Chamber of Commerce and Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO), the village is considering the solicitation of bids for a single commercial waste and recycling franchise that could produce a cost savings of 35 to 40 percent. The proposed franchise would only apply to businesses. Residential garbage and recycling service would continue under the village’s current contract with Waste Management, according to the village. There would not be a residential rate increase. The village would only award a franchise if, based on the competitive pricing received, most businesses would save money. Resident Madeline Lipka was recently selected by the Village of Grayslake Economic Development Commission as the 2012 recipient of its Volunteer of the Year Award. Lipka served in many capacities with the Grayslake Chamber of Commerce from 1994 to 2011, including president. In addition to her work with the chamber, Lipka has been an active figure in the Lake County community as president and CEO of Community Trust Credit Union. “Madeline’s dedication and service, not only to the Chamber of Commerce, but also to the community, has greatly benefited economic development in Grayslake,” said Phil Harris, Chairman of the Economic Development Commission. Attracting and retaining businesses, job creation and spending were the main issues discussed by candidates seeking election to Lake County Board District 6, the 62nd House District and the 31st Senate District at the Oct. 25 Grayslake Chamber of Commerce's luncheon. Featured speakers included Republican Joe Neal and Democrat Melinda Bush for the 31st Senate District; Democrat Pat Carey and Republican Jeff Werfel for the newly-drawn Lake County Board District 6; and incumbent State Rep. Families from throughout the area came to Central Park for food, fireworks, music and fun at the 15th annual Family Picnic and Fireworks in Grayslake.
Thousands of people came together to celebrate summer and the Fourth of July during the Grayslake Family Picnic and Fireworks celebration on June 30. Kids and adults from throughout the area went to Central Park for food, rides, games and of course, fireworks. "I love the fireworks the most," said 8-year-old Arianna Sprenger. "I also love the bungee jumping - well, all the rides, actually - and the pizza and my mom likes the music." She only had one complaint of the outdoor event.
