A record number of participants joined in the Grayslake Chamber of Commerce's recent 20th annual 5K Race & Fun Run. We caught up with some of them to see why it is such a popular event. Joanne Torogian, of Grayslake who also works as a Youth Librarian at the Grayslake Area Public Library, said, "This is the second year in a row I've participated. My first race, I was just hoping to finish; but this year, I am hoping to beat last year’s time." A group of the race volunteers - Mark, Greg, Mike, and Brent - are friends from The Chapel, a multi-site church with a Grayslake campus. Joyce Campbell Named Volunteer of the Year

Campbell recognized for her extensive community involvement and her work with area youth.

"Every time I wake up, I think 'Oh good, I've got another 24 hours; what am I going to do with them?'" Campbell said. She accepted her award during the Grayslake Chamber of Commerce's holiday reception Dec. 2 at State Bank of The Lakes. Campbell founded the non-profit organization The Oasis in 2003 with the hope of providing a space for youth to meet up and study in a safe environment. "The Village of Grayslake made the building available to us in 2007 and we opened in April 2008 after extensive renovations," she said.
