Congratulations to all of the Grayslake athletes who advanced to state!
Grayslake Central and Grayslake North athletes competed at the state track and field meet May 16-18. Grayslake Central ranked 36th in the state. Here's a look at how Grayslake Central athletes performed in various events in the state finals, according to the IHSA website: Grayslake North freshman Allie O'Connell, who took first place in the 100-meter high hurdles at the Palatine Sectional, came in seventh in the preliminaries at state. Only the top three finishers qualified for the state finals.
Both teams are headed to the state playoffs.
The Knights from Grayslake North finished off the regular season with a 17-7 win over Grayslake Central and improved to 15-4 on the season with their 12th straight win. In front of a huge crowd with the help of over 150 Grayslake Youth Lacrosse League participants, North jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The defense led by Goalie Eric York, as well as first team All-Conference selection Ben Smith, were steady all night. Shane Pech, Kevin Carter, Jake Lamb and Ian Pearce were rock solid in keeping Grayslake Central off balance all night. It's going to be a big week for many Grayslake Central and Grayslake North athletes as they compete in regional, sectional and state events for various sports. Here's a look at the action coming up this week, according to the IHSA website: Girls Soccer Grayslake Central will face Chicago (CICS/Northtown) at 4:30 p.m. May 15 at Grayslake Central in the regional semifinals. The winner of this game will face winner of the Lakes Community High School-Chicago (Resurrection) game, which will be played at 6:30 p.m. May 15 at Grayslake Central. The regional finals are set for 11 a.m. May 18 at GCHS. The winner of the Grayslake Regional will face the winner of the Antioch Regional in the sectional semifinal at 6:30 p.m. May 21. The Knights defeated Lake Forest on Monday.
The Knights from Grayslake North won their 10th straight game with a 15-10 win over visiting Lake Forest. Trailing 9-6 heading into the final quarter, Grayslake outscored the Scouts 9-1 over the final 12 minutes for the victory. Ben Smith scored his first goal, and it was a big one to propel North to the win. Other scorers for the Knights were Brendan Walker, Farhan Khan and AJ Fish each with 4 goals. Ben Smith, Freddie Williams and Jack Mattea also found the back of the net. Fish also dished out 3 assists, as did Mattea. Eric York rebounded for a tough second half and active Long Poles Ian Pearce, Jake Lamb and Shane Pech held Lake Forest to 2 goals in the second half. Check out the results of the Grayslake Central and Palatine High School Sectional meets.
A number of Grayslake Central and Grayslake North runners qualified for the state track meet following the girls Grayslake Central Sectional, held May 9 and the Palatine High School Sectional, held May 10. GCHS placed second at the sectional meet with 89 points, with Lakes Community High School of Lake Villa taking first with 103 points, according to the IHSA website. GCHS senior Cara Engal took first place in the pole vault. Senior Jamie Mara took first in the 100-meter high hurdles; she also won third place in the 300-meter low hurdles. Runners also took first in the 4x200-meter relay, including Engal, Maddie Jacobs, Sara O'Malley and Leah Kloss. Kloss, a junior, also took first in the 200-meter dash. What was the final score against Waubonsie Valley on Saturday?
The Grayslake North lacrosse team finished off their 12th win of the season with a 16-2 thrashing of Waubonsie Valley at North High School. The defense was led by Eric York in goal with 9 saves. Ben Smith continued his stellar play on the defensive side of the ball as did Kevin Carter, Ian Pearce, Jake Lamb and Effrain Rodriguez. AJ Fish added to his state leading scoring with 4 goals on the day while handing out 6 assists. That gives Fish 109 points on 56 goals and 53 assists. Brendan Walker chipped in with 4 goals and an assist, and Freddie Williams added 3 goals. The Knights have improved to 11-4 for the season.
The Knights started fast vs. Lake Zurich for the win on Thursday night. North opened a halftime lead of 8-2 and didn’t look back for the 13-5 final score. The Knights had 7 different goal scorers on the night, with AJ Fish leading the way with 4 goals and 3 assists. Jack Mattea, Alex Fletcher, and David Collins each had 2 goals, and Brendan Walker, Freddie Williams and Spencer Davis added 1 apiece. Brendan Walker added 3 assists as well. Eric York was tremendous in goal with 10 quality saves. Ben Smith, Ian Pearce, Shane Pech, Kevin Carter and Jake Lamb were steady all night long on the defensive side of the ball. Grayslake North overcame a slow start to win a tough game with Warren 11-3 Wednesday Night in Gurnee. AJ Fish paced the Knights with 5 goals and 3 assists. Brendan Walker chipped in 3 goals and had 2 assists as well. Other scorers for Grayslake North were Jack Mattea with 2 goals and David Collins with 1. Fish and Walker continue to lead the way for North. Fish leads all scorers in the state with 92 points on 48 goals and 44 assists. Walker is also near the leaders with 46 points on 27 goals and 19 assists. Ben Smith and Eric York continue to anchor the defense while Dave Collins and Freddie Williams have been outstanding at the Midfield. The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday and included both Grayslake District 127 schools.
On mobile? You can see interactive map here. Newsweek came out with its annual high school rankings Monday and included both Grayslake Central and Grayslake North High Schools. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about the other ranked high schools by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. In addition, instead of averaging the number of courses offered, this year Newsweek considered the percentage of students enrolled in AP, IB or Advance International Certificate courses…
