Hurricane Sandy: A Midwest View from Afar

Fatalities have occurred due to the wrath of Hurricane Sandy, and damage to property in the storm's path. Check out the photo gallery and videos to see what our east coast counterparts are dealing with, being in the eye of the storm.

Here in the midwest, we can only see from afar what being in the middle of Hurricane Sandy is like right now. The powerful storm has bought fatalities and destruction.  Two youths were crushed while in a New Salem, MA home, while a Pearl River, NY man also was killed after being pinned under a tree in his home.  Sandy is affecting air travel throughout the United States.  Chicago's O'Hare International Airport has already issued an airport emergency advisory and warned service will be limited due to severe weather in the east.   As of Monday, 5,000 flights had already been cancelled nationwide, with an unknown number connected to O'Hare. Thousands more were expected to be grounded before mid-week, according to Huffington Post. To follow …

Hurricane Isaac Intensifies, Gas Prices Rise

Gas prices could go up 10 cents in the next week because refineries were taken offline as Isaac threatens the Gulf Coast.

As Hurricane Isaac intensifies and threatens the Gulf Coast with significant storm surge and hurricane force winds, oil companies with refineries in Louisiana have started to evacuate employees and shut-down operations. The result will likely mean higher gasoline prices for area drivers. AAA is reporting that it is likely drivers across the country will experience higher gas prices as a result of the tropical storm heading toward the Gulf Coast. Roughly 1.3 billion barrels a day — or 8 percent — of the country’s refining capacity was taken offline in preparation of Isaac making landfall in Louisiana, according to a story on the Wall Street Journal Monday.
