The Lake County Fairgrounds Gets a Facelift

One student's school project turns into a community initiative.

The one thing lacking at the Lake County Fairgrounds is landscaping. That was changed Saturday when 15-year-old Jenelle Brodzik of Wadsworth orchestrated some 50 volunteers to plant hundreds of trees, shrubs and perennials. “The gravel pits and the barns need color and greenery. Much of the area needs growth and life,” Brodzik said. The Warren Township High School Sophomore chose the beautification initiative for her community service project mandatory for her advanced placement government and politics class. “We want our students to become informed and active on an issue with a community service component,” said Michele Bertola, Brodzik’s teacher. “We expect the AP students to become leaders, and Jenelle is definitely doing that.” Brodzik…

83rd Annual Lake County Fair Deemed a Success by LCFA Staff

The Lake County Fair Association officials are happy with the success of this year's fair despite lower attendance figures. They are focused on big plans for the future.

The 83rd annual Lake County Fair was proclaimed a success by Lake County Fair Association Board members and associates alike after its conclusion earlier this month. Although this year’s attendance of about 88,000 dipped from last years total of 106,000 people, the Lake County Fair Association staff said there was a resounding sense of improvement from attendees. Kelli Kepler-Yarc, a secretary with the Lake County Fair Association, was one of the many staff members to praise the execution of this year’s fair and explained how attendance cannot be used as a sole indicator of the outcome of the event. “Attendance was lower this year for fairs across the state, so we’re not too worried about that issue,” Kepler-Yarc said. “We’ve improved in …

Had a great time at the fair as we always have but the demo derbies are probably the worst run I have ever seen. The track crew is the pits and the rent-a-cops are useless!!. People would stand along the fence blocking the view of the people in the stands and th security staff just stood there, if you complained they gave you a hard time and threatened to throw you out. We loved the activities …   more ›

The enticing smell of warm funnel cakes and laughter from the carnival rides will abound at the 83rd annual Lake County Fair, which runs Tuesday, July 26, through Sunday, July 31. Several longtime fair acts will be returning, including the popular demolition derby and PCRA Professional Rodeo. Sheri Vyfvinkel, business manager for the Lake County Fair Association, said the fair also will bring in some exciting new acts this year – the Professional PRCA Rodeo and an event known as the Banana Derby, featuring monkeys trained as jockeys riding dogs around a racetrack. Single-day general admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and children ages 5 to 12, while season passes are $35 for adults and $15 for seniors and children. …

From antique shows to dog shows to swap meets, the Lake County Fair Association is busy throughout the year.

Summer finally has arrived in Grayslake, and with it, a wide variety of monthly events at the Lake County Fairgrounds. The Lake County Fair Association has events planned throughout the rest of the year for fun through the seasons. Sheri Vyfvinkel, LCFA business manager, is more than satisfied with the number of acts involved in this year’s fair. “The great news is that almost every single weekend this year is full of outside events,” Vyfvinkel said. “We’re really happy something is happening so often.” Vyfvinkel went on to explain that while many of these events are returning acts, the LCFA is taking steps to also bring in fresh and exciting outside acts. “Right now we’re focusing on a solid foundation,” Vyfvinkel said. “Don’t expect …
