With thousands of U.S. troops fighting for our freedoms overseas, members of the Grayslake Fire Department and the Grayslake community are once again coming together to help send some support from our own community. “Our mission is simple: to provide our local troops with personal items they are in need of as they continue to fight for our freedoms,” said Fire Commissioner Gregory Koeppen. “Last year 225 care packages were sent overseas and we hope to surpass that number this year,” adds Koeppen. Now through Jan. 27, residents are being encouraged to drop off items that will be shipped to troops serving overseas. These everyday items, we take for granted, include small non-perishable food items (beef jerky, cookies, candy, snacks, oatmeal …

Described as the 'ideal volunteer' among several Grayslake organizations, Dick Lawrence died at age 87.
To say Richard 'Dick' Lawrence Sr. was involved would be an understatement. The longtime Grayslake resident held an active roll in several clubs and organizations across town. Lawrence died June 17 at the age of 87. Born in 1924 to Evan and Bernice in Libertyville, Lawrence served in the army during World War II. He married his wife Joanne and had three children. The family remained in the area where Lawrence became an integral part of the community. He was an active member of several organizations including the United Protestant Church 4-Cers, the Lake County Farm Bureau, the Grayslake American Legion, the Grayslake Lions Club, and the Grayslake Historical Society. “When he could he was active as a volunteer, and when he couldn’t because …

One of the quotable lines from the classic holiday movie "A Christmas Story" can be applied to Grayslake's own Greg Koeppen, who was in Chicago recently for the theatre version of the show where he volunteered to put on the pink bunny suit.
"You'll shoot your eye out kid!" "It's fra-jee-lay. It must be Italian." "I triple-dog dare ya!" The memorable lines from the movie A Christmas Story now are performed in live theater in A Christmas Story, The Musical! Greg Koeppen of Grayslake spent a holiday evening with a friend in the city to see the show. But he didn't just sit back and watch. He volunteered to don the special pink bunny suit, which the character Ralphie received as a present instead of the one he desperately wanted, a Red Ryder BB gun. Koeppen said he was comfortable in the bunny suit. "Why not? Life is too short," Koeppen said. He said the musical at the Chicago Theatre was awesome. "The actors have so much talent," he said. The show runs through Dec. 30, and …
