Few District 46 Students Attended Strike Camps on Day One

Neither Champions nor the Grayslake Park District saw many District 46 students at Wednesday's strike programs.

The majority of some 4,000 District 46 students either stayed at home or their parents found alternative daycare for them on the first day of the teacher strike Wednesday. District 46 Supt. Ellen Correll reported to Patch that as of about 9 a.m. Wednesday, the headcount for the Champions program being offered at Prairieview School from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. was just 25 students. Attendance was even bleaker at the Grayslake Park District's "Strike Camp," which runs 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday and next Tuesday if necessary. Monday is a holiday in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Day Jr.'s birthday. "We only have a handful (of students) today, four right now," park district director Jeff Nehila told Patch Wednesday morning. "My guess is…

More than 300 teachers went on strike after Tuesday's eight-hour mediation session with the school board ended without a new contract agreement. Teachers have been without a contract since July 2012. Jim Pergander, business agent for Lake County Federation of Teachers Local 504, said teachers were present at the picket lines at all school buildings as of 7:30 a.m. They continued picketing until about 3 p.m., the end of the normal school day for most D46 schools. Teachers walked the picket lines with signs reading: "I deserve a fair contract," "We're not asking for what the board can't give," "I …

District 46 Strike is On

A contract settlement was not reached between District 46 School Board and the teachers' union Tuesday. Classes were cancelled for Wednesday, as Day 1 of the strike begins.

In an eleventh hour negotiating session with a federal mediator lasting nearly eight hours Tuesday, the District 46 Board of Education and Lake County Federal of Teachers Local 504 could not reach a contract agreement. As a result, the district's 300-plus teachers are now on strike, with some 4,000 students affected. Superintendent Ellen Correll posted the following statement to the district's Website shortly before midnight Tuesday. Parents were also notified via an automated phone call. Unfortunately, the Board of Education and D46 teachers were unable to reach an agreement. UPDATED: Can Middle Ground Be Found?

In what could be the final bargaining session before a potential strike, the Grayslake School District 46 Board and the teachers' union will meet this afternoon in hopes of reaching a contract agreement.

Updated Jan. 12 In an email from Superintendent Ellen Correll that went out to all District 46 parents who subscribe to the district's newsletter: The Board of Education/Teachers Union negotiations on Friday night did NOT result in an agreement. There is another negotiation session scheduled for Tuesday, January 15, 2013. It is my suggestion however, that you begin planning for a strike and any needed child care. I will continue to update you but wanted to make sure you have plenty of time to make plans. I will be working with Champions to develop child care plans at Meadowview and Prairieview. As soon as those options are firmed up, I will post on the district website. I know this is a very challenging situation for all of you and it is …

UPDATED: Strike Date Set in District 46

Unable to come to an agreement at their last negotiating session on Monday, the teachers union has announced a strike date of Jan. 16.

Update, Tuesday, Nov. 13, 3 p.m. Jim Pergander, business agent for the Lake County Federation of Teachers Local 540, told Patch the Jan. 16 strike date was chosen because "we wanted to give everyone enough time to prepare." The date, he said, "looks like it's way out there, but it's closer than we think." The holidays were another reason the date was set in January. However, said Pergander, "Our priority is to settle this at the table." Another negotiating session is scheduled for Nov. 28. Pergander said whether the strike happens "literally depends on how things go on the 28th." That does not mean, though, that both sides can't or won't have an additional session beyond that date if they are close to a settlement, he said. After Monday's …

The Grayslake District 46 School Board and teachers' union had their first negotiating session with a federal mediator this week to resolve contract issues. Negotiations will continue on Nov. 12.

The latest news regarding the contract negotiations between Grayslake School District 46 and the teachers' union is that the talks will continue on Nov. 12. The following is a statement from D46 Supt. Ellen Correll, posted on the district's Website: The District 46 Board of Education and the Grayslake Federation of Teachers continue to bargain in good faith, including a meeting last night, October 30. Another date to meet has been scheduled for Monday, November 12. During this period, we expect "business as usual," meaning school will be open. If anything changes with this, parents will be immediately notified through the emergency calling system and email. Thank you for your patience. I will do my best to keep communications open! The best and final contract offers from the Grayslake District 46 School Board and teachers' union have been posted for public view. The unresolved issues are related to salary, retirement and flex benefits in lieu of medical insurance.

Nine days after teachers in Grayslake District 46 voted to authorize a strike as a result of the school board declaring an impasse in contract negotiations, both sides have made their best and final offers available for public inspection. Negotiations will continue, however. Jim Pergander, a representative for the Lake County Federation of Teachers Local 504, said the first negotiation session with a federal mediator will take place Tuesday, Oct. 30. By law, the union must give 10 days strike notice. D46 Teachers' Union Approves Authorization to Strike if Necessary

An overwhelming majority of teachers in Grayslake District 46 have voted to authorize a strike if necessary, as a result of stalled contract negotiations with the school board. However, union officials said there has been no decision to actually strike.

Update, Oct. 17: Statement from Supt. Ellen Correll As reported in the media, District 46 teachers voted this week to authorize a strike, IF NECESSARY. After the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board (IELRB) receives the final offers from both the Board of Education and the Teachers' Union, the teachers will have a 10 day waiting period before considering to walk out. It is my hope that both sides will continue to bargain in good faith. The Board of Education and the Teachers' Union are currently working with a Federal Mediator.
