Grayslake's first licensed beer brewery, Light the Lamp, will hold its grand opening Saturday at its new downtown location at Lake and Center streets.
From the basement to the block, Light the Lamp Brewery has a new home in a downtown Grayslake storefront where patrons can taste and take home a variety of hockey-inspired microbrews. The grand opening will be held at 2:30 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Dec. 1, at Lake Center Place at 10 N. Lake St., Suite 107. Sunday hours will be noon to 10 p.m. Regular hours will be announced Monday. Store capacity is just 49 people, so on opening day patrons may want to call ahead at (847) 752-8489 to make sure there isn't a line out the door! "We're very excited. It's been a long time coming. A group of Grayslake friends is proposing to open Light the Lamp microbrewery in Lake Center Place in the downtown.
Grayslake resident Jeff Sheppard, who is proposing to open a microbrewery downtown, got a bubbly reception from the village board Tuesday. The proposal was discussed during the board's informal committee-of-the-whole meeting Sept. 4. Mayor Rhett Taylor called the proposed addition to Lake Center Place, located at 10 N. Lake St., "unique and distinct." Hobby Gone Wild Sheppard, who owns Light the Lamp Brewery with three friends, told Patch their home brewing "hobby gone wild" is ready to be unleashed as a bricks and mortar business where customers can purchase and taste test a selection of microbrews that will change with the seasons. Inspired by Oktoberfest, a small band of Grayslake hockey dads decided to craft their own beer with hockey-themed names.
It all began in Helsinki. Four Grayslake hockey dads went to Helsinki in 2009 to watch the Chicago Blackhawks play, the season they won the Stanley Cup. Don Chatten, Kurt Engdahl, Bill Hermes and Jeff Shepherd soaked in the culture and sampled the Helsinki beers, even having a drink with Coach Q, Joel Quenneville. There, an idea was born. "Why don't we make microbrews with obscure hockey names?" asked Chatten. "That's what we asked ourselves. And here we are." And so Light the Lamp Brewery, at lightthelampbrewery.com, was born. They incorporated in November 2010 and began experimenting with recipes and bottling processes, designing logos and T-shirts. Light the Lamp offfically went into production in 2011.
