Grayslake's first licensed beer brewery, Light the Lamp, will hold its grand opening Saturday at its new downtown location at Lake and Center streets.
From the basement to the block, Light the Lamp Brewery has a new home in a downtown Grayslake storefront where patrons can taste and take home a variety of hockey-inspired microbrews. The grand opening will be held at 2:30 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Dec. 1, at Lake Center Place at 10 N. Lake St., Suite 107. Sunday hours will be noon to 10 p.m. Regular hours will be announced Monday. Store capacity is just 49 people, so on opening day patrons may want to call ahead at (847) 752-8489 to make sure there isn't a line out the door! "We're very excited. It's been a long time coming. We've been doing this at home for years," said Don Chatten, who co-owns the "nano-brewery" with friends Bill Hernes, Jeff Sheppard, Dave Cavanaugh and Kurt Engdahl. …

Grayslake's first outdoor specialty store opens in Washington Square.
Hainesville resident and outdoor enthusiast Amy Knutson Strack realized a lifelong dream of owning a business when she celebrated the grand opening of her new store, Northerly Outfitters, in Grayslake's Washington Square Thursday. With family, friends and community leaders at her side, Knutson Strack said she hoped the speciaty store would create new friendships, contribute to the local economy, create a few new jobs and be a destination for customers who share her love of the outdoors, even if we are in the mountain-less Midwest. "My goal is for the store to mean a great deal not just to me but to others. I hope it will fill a gap in terms of finding products and solutions for people to get out and enjoy what the area has to offer." …

A group of Grayslake friends is proposing to open Light the Lamp microbrewery in Lake Center Place in the downtown.
Grayslake resident Jeff Sheppard, who is proposing to open a microbrewery downtown, got a bubbly reception from the village board Tuesday. The proposal was discussed during the board's informal committee-of-the-whole meeting Sept. 4. Mayor Rhett Taylor called the proposed addition to Lake Center Place, located at 10 N. Lake St., "unique and distinct." Hobby Gone Wild Sheppard, who owns Light the Lamp Brewery with three friends, told Patch their home brewing "hobby gone wild" is ready to be unleashed as a bricks and mortar business where customers can purchase and taste test a selection of microbrews that will change with the seasons. The brews will also be sold to distributors. "We've got a good product and hope to be open by the end of …

A new gift boutique opens its doors offering a selection of invitations, announcements, gifts and more.
Nestled next to the UPS Store in the Atkinson Center shopping center at Atkinson Road and Center Street is a punch of Pazazz! that Grayslake has been missing. A new gift boutique that offers a full gamet of gifts like custom die-cut invitations, personalized stationary, huge mylar balloons, gift baskets, purses, bags, scented pencils and so much more. Being a hockey fan and beer league player, I love the name. Bummer the NHL lockout is looming over your grand opening. Can't wait to see your regular hours. If you're open this Monday, maybe I'll pick up a growler to bring to my game. Nothing like a hockey beer after a good skate.   more ›
