With only 80,000 new jobs added to the economy in June, job creation promises to be a major campaign issue for Congress. Take the Patch poll voicing your opinion on the best way to add jobs.
Small business is the economic force both Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) and his Democratic opponent in the Nov. 6 general election, Brad Schneider of Deerfield, see as the country’s job creation force. While Schneider and Dold think America’s small businesses need easier access to capital and less regulatory burden, their campaigns are wasting little time branding the other as more extreme than their words show. Earlier: Dold, Schneider Try To Defy Labels A firm idea of how to create jobs promises to be a key component of the fall campaign in the wake of Friday’s report showing only 80,000 new jobs created in June. Unemployment remains at 8.2 percent with underemployment at 14.9 percent, according to a report on CNBC. Both graduates of…

New miniature golf establishment is now open on Route 45.
Say "Aloha" to Aloha Falls! The miniature golf establishment at Libertyville Recreation and Sports Complex at Route 45 and Peterson Road, just outside of Grayslake, officially opened for business June 8. "A miniature golf course — it's back in Libertyville!" said Conrad "Connie" Kowal, director of the Recreation and Sports Complex. "We're happy to have you here." The site, previously home to a miniature golf course, has been vacant since 2007, Kowal said. In October, Kowal was approached by Ryan Tracy, who dreamed of opening his own miniature golf course. "I said, 'We've got a property that could be the reality for your dreams,'" said Kowal. "It's been wonderful working with Ryan." Libertyville trustees voted unanimously May 22 to approve…

Former employees and loyal customers share what they loved most about Pat's Pizza in Grayslake. It closed down this month after 31 years in business.
"Thanks for 31 years." With those simple words on the marquis, Pat's Pizza recently closed its doors. Owner Pat Harris said the competition had gotten too intense to remain open. The sudden closure of the business at 719 Barron Blvd. (Route 83) in Grayslake shocked some former employees and customers, who said they are sad to see it go. "It's awful, awful, awful," said Karen Weinert, an employee at Pat's for 21 years. "I'm so sad." She said there were many long-term employees at Pat's. "People worked there for 15, 17, 21 years," Weinert said. "We were a family. The customers also felt like family to us. Every Christmas, you knew the college kids would come back there. Pat's was a big part of the community." From throwing peanut shells on …

Pat’s Pizza was never just a building or a place to work. Pat’s Pizza may be gone physically, but the heart of Pat’s Pizza will live on for generations to come. Pat’s Pizza was my first job, handed down to me by my older sister, Erin. My first night at Pat’s Pizza, I thought I was getting interviewed; I had no idea that Karen Weinert, the manager of Pat’s Pizza, had already given me the job. At first, I stumbled, messed up the seating chart, and dropped many glasses of water and pizzas. Despite my clumsiness, however, Pat’s Pizza never gave up on me. Soon, with the guidance of the waitresses, I gained experience at being a hostess and busboy, and later I became a server myself. I learned that the customers are the first priority. I learned…

On Feb 1, Pat’s Pizza in Grayslake announced their doors were closing, unexpectedly ending a 31-year era centered on more than pizza and peanuts. To Pat, DeAnn, and staff: Thank you for plastering your tables and walls with yearbook photos and memorabilia from our past. Thank you for endlessly donating to our schools, athletics, animal shelters, and charities. Thank you for hosting our banquets, wedding rehearsals, meetings, and dance classes. Thank you for shaping the lives of so many young people by hiring us to work our first job in high school, then welcoming us back every summer when we returned from college. Thank you for instilling in us the work ethic and manners we carry with us today. Thank you as well to the loyal customers who …
It's the end of an era as a Grayslake pizza joint closes down.
Pat's Pizza was a traditional spot to go in Grayslake, for families enjoying a night out, sports teams celebrating their season or couples on first dates. It is the end of an era as Pat's closed its doors this week. "It was a fairly sudden decision," said owner Pat Harris. "We've been in business for 31 years. But now there is so much competition that the business just shrinks." One thing Harris never added to the restaurant over the years was a bar. He feels that hurt his business. "I couldn't compete without a bar, but I never wanted a bar," he said. "I wanted a family place." And that's what Pat's Pizza was. Customers could eat peanuts and throw the shells on the floor, and look through the funny pictures from old Grayslake yearbooks on…

To some of you who think Dold should pay his employees at Rose Pest Solution any overtime: Congressman Robert Dold does not steal any money from his employees. Those money belong to the Company and thus, to the owner. Besides, the overtime laws favor the lazy employees and I hope Congressman Dold will change them because paying an employee overtime might hurt the business up to the point of …   more ›
