More Cold Temperatures, Snow on the Way

What's the highest temperature we'll see this week?

It's tough to imagine that a year ago today, the temperature was in the 80s. I don't know about you, but to me, it seems like it's never going to get warm! Don't expect any warm weather this week. The highest forecast temperature is 40 degrees—with partly sunny skies—on Sunday. The week is forecast to start out with another blast of winter. The National Weather Service in Chicago says there's a chance of freezing rain and snow, possibly mixed with sleet, on Monday morning. Snow could then fall during the afternoon hours, followed by a slight chance of rain and snow after 4 p.m. There's a 90 percent chance of precipitation, with 1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet accumulation possible. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be cold, …

Snow Blower Etiquette in Grayslake: What Times of Day Are Appropriate to Snow Blow?

Snow blowers are extremely helpful after a big storm, but they can also be very noisy. How late is too late and how early is too early to use the machines?

With snowfalls averaging 1 to 2 inches per hour Tuesday, Grayslake residents will likely be using their snow blowers over the next couple days. Patch wants to know: How late is too late to snow blow your property and how early is too early? We posed the “snow blower etiquette” question to our Facebook fans Monday and here’s what residents had to say: I think 6AM - 9PM are fair hours. As long as your sidewalk is clean so my kids can get to the bus, I could care less. Anything goes since I help out little old ladies out next door. If you need to get to work....you do what you must. Especially when you don't get home late the night before from winter weather traffic. Lawn mowing is a whole other story however. It does not bother me at all …

Sorry I have more to add...the residents who do not shovel their sidewalks seem to have the time/money to shovel their driveway or have a plow service for themselves. The roads are more narrow now with the snow piled up, as well as slippery. Help protect our kids and shovel your sidewalk! Hope it doesn't take a tragedy to get thd point across.   more ›

Snowstorm Update: How Much Snow Fell in Northern Illinois?

Winter Storm Saturn was expected to dump 6-10 inches of snow across northern Illinois.

Update, 11:20 p.m.: Here's a look at more snowfall totals. Editor's Note: I wanted to note that not all towns have totals on the National Weather Service website. The National Weather Service relies on snowfall reports (emailed, phoned in or via Facebook) from residents and observers. So, sadly, I can only provide totals for the Patch communities included in the reports they've received. I often include other non-Patch communities just to offer a look at other regional totals. Did you measure the snowfall at your house? Share your totals in the comment section! ---------------- Update, 7:04 p.m.: Check out the latest snowfall totals as reported to the National Weather Service in Chicago. I'll provide another update around 11 p.m…

Local Resident Creates Snow Sculptures for Community to Enjoy

Brett James' latest creation, a large alligator, can be seen at Twin Lakes Park in Wildwood.

If you're driving down Mill Road in Wildwood, don't be alarmed if you see a large, white alligator resting in the snow at Twin Lakes Park. Thanks to all of that wet, heavy snow we received on Tuesday, Wildwood resident Brett James was able to get over to the park to build his latest snow sculpture. "I do it for the people in the community," said James, whose snow sculptures can regularly be seen in the park after a good snowfall. He often invites the community to come out and help sculpt his latest creation. Wednesday's sculpting event was last-minute, however, and due to the lack of assistants, James created an alligator instead of the life-size elephant he'd initially planned. James' neighbor, Erik Nunez, stopped by with his daughters, …

Lake, McHenry Counties Under Winter Storm Warning

Up to 10 inches of snow could fall across the area.

It looks like Lake and McHenry Counties could see snowfall totals of 6 to 10 inches by Wednesday morning. A winter storm warning is now in effect for both counties until 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago. "Snow will significantly slow travel and make it dangerous at times through the early evening commute, so persons planning travel should anticipate extremely elevated travel times," according to the National Weather Service, noting that "temporary white-out conditions with near-zero visibility" are possible. Snowfall amounts in excess of 4 or 5 inches have already been reported across northern Illinois.
