Washington Square Wellness Festival To Be Held Saturday

Your Grayslake Patch will be represented at Saturday's Washington Square Wellness Festival along with many other local businesses. Be sure to stop by for freebies, samples, raffles and more. Proceeds will benefit the Oasis Grayslake Youth Center.

Saturday, Sept. 29 is the 3rd annual Washington Square Wellness Festival featuring the Grayslake Patch and many other businesses. The event will be held noon to 4 p.m. in Washington Square, across from the College of Lake County. Patch asks event coordinator Matt Petersen, owner of The Fitness Pursuit, all about it. Tell us a little about yourself Matt, and The Fitness Pursuit. I have been shaped from my past. Being obese growing up, having divorced young parents, playing high school varsity sports, having knee reconstruction and a family with poor health and a father who died at 49 all have created who I am. I have been personal training since 1998. In 2008, The Fitness Pursuit-Multi-Sport Studio opened offering a diverse, high tech and …

Fitness Gear Sale Helps "Crusade for Connor"

The Fitness Pursuit in Grayslake is holding a fitness gear sale to benefit Connor Semenske, a baby fighting a rare and potentially fatal genetic disease.

The Fitness Pursuit in Grayslake Saturday is hosting a Fitness Resale for endurance athletes from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, April 21 in an effort to help raise money for the Crusade for Connor, a charity benefiting a little boy with a HLH, a rare and highly fatal genetic disease. The Fitness Resale is a chance to purchase some gently used workout gear and clothing. Proceeds benefit Crusade for Connor, a group that helps raise funds to pay for the care of little Connor Semenske of Milwaukee. Connor has HLH or Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis also known as hemophagocytic syndrome. The disease is one in which Connor's immune system is hyperactive and attacking his internal organs, according to his site on CaringBridge. What this means is that …

A New Year, A New Me: Week Nine

My ongoing quest to lose weight and increase fitness.

I can see the finish line - or maybe not. What I have learned more than anything during this 10-week program at The Fitness Pursuit in Grayslake is that health, fitness and weight loss has to be a lifelong process. Think marathon, not sprint. It's not easy. In the past two weeks, I got up at 4:15 a.m. so I could join others from TFP programs for four mile walks at 5 a.m. I wear my BodyBugg all the time to track daily calories burned, steps taken and hours of workout. I log all my food. It still is frustrating that the scale doesn't seem to realize how hard I am working. Progress is excruciatingly slow. But my body fat dropped another four percent, my water intake is up, and the log of calories in versus calories out show efforts in right …

Pat, good for you! It sounds like you have ingrained the exercise habit into your life where it is automatic. It is an appointment you keep. And I agree with you about timing - if I don't get it done first thing in the morning, it is always hanging over you. In fact, that is what my new post this week is about. Thanks for your comment!   more ›

2012: A New Me ... A New You?

I am starting off the new year with a new workout and weight-loss regimen at The Fitness Pursuit. Join me!

As the food festival that is the holiday season is over and the New Year is just about to begin, I have decided to do something big — in pursuit of getting smaller. I am making a change. Instead of just making my annual (usually short-lived) resolution to eat less/exercise more/lose weight, I am committing to it. I will make it happen. But I need some help. So I signed up for a Drop 20-40 Pounds Weight Management program at The Fitness Pursuit in Grayslake. The class meets from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays starting Jan 2, 2012. It runs through March 5. The Fitness Pursuit, 1186 E. Washington, Grayslake, is across from the College of Lake County. I love doing things with others, and I know January is a big time for lots of people to make weight-…
