St. Gilbert's Student Wins First Place in VFW Essay Contest

A St. Gilbert Catholic School seventh-grader is the state's first place winner of the VFW's 2012-13 Patriot Pen Essay Contest. In addition, a fifth-grade teacher has been named the district's first place winner of a VFW teacher award.

Saint Gilbert Catholic School is pleased to announce that seventh-grader Celia D. (last name withheld per archdiocese rules), is the state first-place winner of VFW’s 2012-2013 Patriot's Pen essay contest. Celia, who was sponsored by VFW Post 4551 and Ladies Auxiliary in Grayslake, wrote her winning essay based on this year’s theme, "What I Would Tell America’s Founding Fathers." The youth essay writing contest is a worldwide competition that gives students in grades 6, 7 and 8 the opportunity to write a 300-400 word theme-based essay expressing their views on democracy. We are also pleased to announce that Jeanine Fout, a fifth grade teacher, is the district first-place winner of VFW’s 2012-2013 SMART/MAHER VFW National Citizenship …

Grayslake Remembers American Heroes On Memorial Day

Parade and tribute to fallen soldiers honored those who are "quietly paying the price for our freedom."

Service members, community members and children rallied together during Grayslake’s Memorial Day celebration to honor those who have served and to recognize the men and women who have died while in the line of duty. Local Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, students from Grayslake North and Central Marching Bands and Poms, YMCA Adventure Guides and Princesses, the Grayslake Park District, the Grayslake Fire Department and Grayslake Police Departments were among many organizations that marched through downtown Grayslake on May 30 as part of the Memorial Day parade. Monica Graham, a Grayslake resident, was one of many parents who brought her children out to the parade to celebrate the holiday. “We like honoring the soldiers,” she said. Ruth …
