Eagle Scout Candidate Continues Distracted Driving Campaign

Grayslake Eagle Scout candidate William Bauman will continue his efforts to educate people about distracted driving at this Saturday's Grayslake Family Picnic & Fireworks event.

The 16th annual event, which will feature the "Taste of Grayslake," will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. in Central Park

Bauman is a member of Boy Scout Troop 73, which will have a booth at the June 29 event. He encourages visitors to stop by the booth and learn about the dangers of distracted driving.

He offers these stats about distracted driving:

  • In 2011, 3,331 people were killed in car crashes involving a distracted driver.
  • Nearly one in four crashes occur because of drivers using their cell phones.
  • Texting or talking on a cell phone makes us 23 times more likely to be in a car accident.
  • Hands-free cell phones are no less dangerous while driving than hand-held cell phones because it's the conversation itself that is the major distraction.
"Let's keep our community alive and don't text and drive," said Bauman. "My Eagle project is designed to educate and bring awareness to everyone I can on the hazards of distracted driving. Remember, no phone or text is worth losing a life over."

Bauman said thanks to Troop 73 and Pack 91, nearly 100 distracted driving signs are being put up all over Grayslake to remind people not to use their cell phones while driving. He previously led an effort to create a sign on the Avon School fence along Route 83 with the words "Stay Alive-Don't Text & Drive" using Solo cups.
