Knight Time For Sports

Reviewing the season through February 29 for Grayslake North High School.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL:

Most wins (20) in a season. Most consecutive wins (13) in a season. First 20-win season in school history. First Tournament Championship (the 16-team McHenry Christmas Tourney). 2012 Regional Champions. This was a record setting group of young ladies who exceeded all marks and expectations in the 2011-2012 season.

The seniors on this squad – Katie McGrath, Sara Steinhoff, Allie Ceglarek, Brooke Sauer and Christina Freese – have set the bar high for next year’s team. The seniors-to-be include Jordyn Bowen and Joanna Guhl and junior-to-be Kendall Detweiller.

The Knights started off their state run by defeating North Chicago 46-44. Then they raced past St. Viator 52-44 to win the Regional Championship. Their sectional semi-final game was against cross-town rival Grayslake Central who put an end to the outstanding season of the Knights by a 56-30 score. Grayslake North finished the season with a 21-9 record with the promise of more of the same to come in future seasons.

Congratulations to Coach Sarver and his staff for an outstanding job and to the Lady Knights for some great memories!

The Knights are currently 19-8 overall and took second place (9-3) in the Fox Valley Conference trailing only Grayslake Central in the Fox Division.

Grayslake North 58, Crystal Lake Central 79

Coach Todd Grunloh said, "It was a tough loss that took us out of contention for the Fox Valley Conference championship, but one that we definitely need to learn from. I thought we had a good couple of days of practice leading up to the game and I thought we played hard during the game. Unfortunately, we just did not execute very well and Crystal Lake Central was able to take advantage of a lot of turnovers that directly led to points. Give all the credit in the world to Crystal Lake Central, they completely outplayed us in all facets of the game. They have a very strong team, and on that specific night we just weren’t able to keep up with them. On Saturday morning we talked about moving on from that game and learning from it, it is much better to struggle in a regular season game, no matter how big it is, than during postseason play where it is single elimination. Ben Guhl played an outstanding game, scoring 16 points (6-6 FG and 2-2 FT’s) and pulling down 8 rebounds. Zack Krupp and Danny Mateling each added 10 points.

2-21-12

Grayslake North 57, Grayslake Central 45

Avenging an earlier loss to their cross-town rivals, the Knights dominated the Rams from start to finish. A big third quarter put the game out of reach as North reeled off 14 unanswered points.

2-24-12

Grayslake North 56, Crystal Lake South 49

Playing against the 2nd place Gators of the big school Valley Division, the Knights pulled out a big win in the crossover battle. This was a huge win for the smaller North school against a large school opponent.

2-29-12

IHSA Regional Semi-Final

Grayslake North 41, Northside Prep 25

The Knights won their Regional Semi-Final match easily. This was the first time in school history that the Knights boys made it to the Regional Finals. They will play their cross-town rivals Grayslake Central in what should be an epic matchup at Antioch this Friday, March 2. The winner moves on to the Sectional Semi-Finals at Grayslake Central. The opponent will most likely be #1 seed North Chicago (20-6) on Tuesday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m.

NEXT UP: On Friday, March 2, North travels to Antioch for the Regional Championship against Grayslake Central (21-7). Arrive early for good seats, as the town of Grayslake will be packing the gym with fans from both teams. This will probably be the best Regional Championship game in the state and it will be intense. Expect both teams to be at full strength and to play with great energy and a raucous crowd on hand.
