The Patch Cubs Win One, Lose One

The GYBA Mustang Cubs defeated the Rockies 3-2, but fall to the Nationals 7-5.

Perhaps their major league namesake will match the .500 record sported by the Cubs of the Mustang League in GYBA so far this year. Aside from an 8-0 whitewashing by the Phillies, all of the Patch Cubs' losses this year were close games.

A 7-7 tie followed the team’s opening 8-7 loss to the Marlins with the current division leading Brewers. The Cubbies won two in a row with a 7-6 victory over the Dodgers and a 13-7 shelling of the Giants. After dropping a tough 4-2 contest to the Pirates, they rebounded with two more victories – a 7-6 win over the Reds and an 8-6 victory over the Dbacks.

The Bruin Bambinos looked to be back on track until they were shut out by the Phillies and then dropped a close game to the Cards 5-2. Last week they beat the Rockies 3-2 thanks to the hitting of Tyler Marson and Daniel Rudman who pounded out two safeties apiece. Smart, aggressive baserunning by Marson led to the winning run. Rudman, Marson and Jack Caldwell pitched superbly in limiting the Rockies to one hit for the entire game.

Against the Nationals, Tyler Marson of the Cubs shut them out for three innings, but the Nationals came back to win the game 7-5. It was a scorcher of a day and the Nationals got hot at the right time to take one from the Cubs.

On Monday of this week, the Cubs visited North Shore Baseball Academy as part of GYBA’s program to improve the skills of the young players. Chris Brown, a catcher on the Central High School’s third in State team three years ago led the team in a variety of drills on hitting, pitching and fielding. His senior year, Brown won the Dave Peregrin award and has taught at North Shore for three years. He is a currently a member of the baseball team at Illinois Wesleyan, which won the 2010 Division III National Championship.

"I really enjoy working with the kids and teaching them how to play the game by learning proper techniques," said Brown.

Cubs Coach John Marson said, "This was a great experience and opportunity. The kids learned some good fundamentals that we hope will help us with three games coming up on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday."
